Try and read this.

I'll try and Breakdown how expensive Dialysis and Chronic kidney care is so expensive in Nigeria.

These are rough estimates in Naira and it will get you wondering.
If you have CKD in Nigeria will you survive

Please read and share
Dialysis costs like 50K in a lot of federal facilities (give or take). (Let's exclude 100k outliers for first starters).

private can charge up to 80K
some highbrow hospitals e.g Lagos, Abuja can charge up to 150K per dialysis session

Dialysis is temporary in CKD NOT A CURE
Some people don't know what Dialysis is

Dialysis basically just removes excess wastes from blood ,purifies and returns the blood.

The person is connected to a machine (see pic). Dialysis isn't a permanent solution.

It just buys you time. Till you can get new kidneys in CKD Image
Ideally a patient needs like 2 to 3 sessions of Dialysis weekly

So- 100K to 150K per week (in a government hospital.
Private - 160k to 240k per week
Highbrow - (300K to 450K per week)

We haven't added antibiotics, antihypertensives, drugs to boost blood. only dialysis!!
Rough estimate in a month

Government hospital -400K to 600K per month
Private- 640K to 960K
Highbrow - 1.2M to 1.8M for dialysis

Drugs vary from drugs for Bp, antibiotics
Erythropoietin to boost blood levels (might need 2 weekly shot
Let's say extra like 400K per week
Kidney transplant cheapest I know is like 40Million. Could be higher

Another problem is getting a right Donor

After a right Donor, since the kidneys are foreign , the body can attack them, you spend money on drugs (immunosuppressants) to make sure no attack on new kidneys
To make sure the body doesn't destroy the kidneys so let's say another extra 2 to 5 M(to keep new kidneys)

So in all, If you want to have good kidney transplant run & live well

Let's budget 10 million extra to keep your new kidneys.
How many Nigerians can afford all these?
I didn't take into cognizance the new rates of all these

since new prices hike has hit the economy.
Now let's ask If an average or middle class Nigerian has a Chronic kidney disease

how many will survive?
In a country that more than 50 percent don't have Health insurance
Some people even get to do transplants after a gofund me.

They later die because they cannot raise money for the immunosuppressants (to prevent the body from fighting) to ensure the kidneys are kept healthy

Are they going to keep asking for crowd funding for every session?
Some people that even get to hospital..because they have to wait for dialysis due to shortage of dialysis machines . They die.

I've seen families sell their properties , borrow money and still lose their loved ones.

Kidney disease impacts on the person, family, loved ones
This is an eye opener that in this economy take your health seriously

Don't gamble with your Health.

Be intentional about your health.
Be intentional about your kidneys. Kidney care is very expensive.

"Supposed 12k" for Dialysis won't scratch the surface for care
The Big question is-

How do I safeguard my Kidneys?

I'd like to add that the kidneys are one of those organs that you can easily protect.

Super easy.
And even if they have problems you can detect ..
So how do I keep my kidney safe?
Drink enough water
Routine health checks
Avoid unnecessary drugs
No to Agbo
No to bleaching creams
Get vaccinated for vaccine preventable disease like Hepatitis B, etc
Healthy diet
Cut Alcohol & smoking
If you're hypertensive or diabetic take your meds

Be intentional

If you don't have Health Insurance or your Family doesn't.

This thread is for you to choose from.
I advice every Nigerian reads and gets one, as sickness is surely happen to us all one day.

PS ( Most are based on my experiences with them and clients who have used them)

Here
Some Health schemes I will add PROs & CONS

NHIS- Federal Government initiative, easy to enroll into, won't break a bank, covers good number of the family

It is so cheap, has the widest hospital coverages. Accessible
Cons of NHIS

when you need services, they will stress you, getting code can be difficult, basic drugs & supplies it might not have

Not all hospitals are NHIS registered.

It can be frustrating being on the scheme and still buying drugs and consumables from your pocket

Every Nigerian should please read this and share. It is a lifesaver

I have seen too many people with Stroke in the Brain coming to the hospital.

I am worried we aren't talking about it.
Here is what I noticed
To start with, A stroke in the Brain happens when the pipes that feed Blood to the Brain either bursts or become blocked.

This cuts off blood supply to the brain, if nothing is done on time, this part of the brains dies

What i noticed in Nigerians Image
100% of the people that had stroke had High blood pressure. (Of course High bp remains the biggest risk)

Some of them knew they had high bp before and occasionally took their meds, some never knew they had High blood pressure, some were to poor to buy their B.p meds sadly.

I used to think I could not fall for scams before. I always thought I could see through.

But after I fell for an organized scam from someone on this app.
Till date I think they jazzed me.

Here
3 years ago, I got a DM from someone on this app.

Opened my DM, and went through the profile of the person. It read he was a representative of an International Organization

I checked his followers, I saw some big shots and top folks following so I assumed, Nice one
He messaged me that they had been following my posts for a while and they were having a project that they'd have me to head and all.

I was excited.
I checked this guy on LinkedIn, he had a good profile detailing his works and collaborations.

I even googled the organization.

Please if you see this, please share. You're saving a life.

There is a dangerous Drug currently circulating in Nigeria.

We have seen 2 people in 3 weeks who were almost killed by this common drug.
The Drug is Deekins Amoxicillin 500 mg (as shown in the pic)

Lot of people use it to treat infections of various origins.

In one person that took this drug he was brought to the Hospital Unconscious, 2nd person was brought into the hospital in a bad shape.

How did they get it? Image
I did lot of digging & found out that this drug has been banned by NAFDAC ( See pic)

On December 3 2024, NAFDAC @NafdacAgency actually warned the public about the drug about the dangerous effects

Telling people to discontinue the use of Deekins Amoxicillin after being flagged Image
