"The Democrats are in deep trouble in the US – and Labour is on the way to joining them"

Whilst it's true, there's no mention of a single word, that explains why, neoliberalism.

The Democratic Party, and Labour, except under Corbyn were neoliberal.

1/🧵theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
Tony Blair was clearly a neoliberal, and so was Gordon Brown. I'm not sure about Jimmy Carter, but every major Democratic politician since, has been neoliberal. Bernie Sanders isn't but he was an independent for much of the time.
2/
Neoliberal doctrine, is essentially Conservative policy. It is no coincidence whatsoever that Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, are generally regarded to have ushered in neoliberalism in the West (I'm aware of Pinochet) Milt Friedman was senior economic adviser to both.
3/
The centre-left continued with it, and have been almost solidly neoliberal since, meaning every government since, have continued with the policy laid down by Reagan and Thatcher. No matter who you voted for, you got neoliberal.
4/
Neoliberals are unbelievably coy and secretive about neoliberalism, often totally denying that neoliberalism exists, and falsely claiming it is a left wing conspiracy theory, when it has got a long documented history.

5/threadreaderapp.com/thread/1947958…
The need to deny neoliberalism exists is clear. It is everything the public hate. What is more, the right don't like admitting they follow anything with liberal in the name. Also acknowledging it, would be acknowledging that the system is rigged.

6/
Neoliberalism, essentially consists of trying to shrink government, privatize everything, to cut back on welfare spending, to promote economic growth over everything else, and to argue prosperity comes via trickle-down.
7/
Neoliberals are almost universally opposed to wealth taxes, or any increasing tax on the wealthy. They are very pro big corporation, very pro-billionaire, basically arguing we need the very wealthy and corporate profit, for prosperity for all.

8/threadreaderapp.com/thread/1948623…
However, neoliberalism, is most visible in what it opposes. It is virulently anti-left wing/socialist, it totally opposes the re-nationalisation of things like the public utilities, no matter how badly they are failing. It opposes regulation, such as environmental protection.
9/
One of the big problems, is ever since it has been denying that neoliberalism exists, and pretending that neoliberal policy, is the only sensible policy to implement, it has got very difficult to see and detect what modern neoliberalism is, and how it is coordinated.
10/
My impression, is that neoliberalism has actually morphed into the agenda of billionaire/oligarchs, big corporations, and hast drifted from the ideology of Hayek, Friedman etc, and is maintained by the network of right wing thinktanks and big media owners.
11/
It also seems certain, that modern right wing populism, Trump, Farage etc, is firmly neoliberal. Don't forget, that neoliberalism was ushered in first in Chile, under the murderous, anti-left wing dictator pinochet.

12/thenation.com/article/world/…
The reason the Democrats and the UK Labour Party are failing is that it is pretty obvious to the public that they are no alternative to the right, and are just a continuation of Conservative policy. The public are baffled as to whoever they vote for, they get the same policy.
13/
This has created an opening for the populist right, who are just liars and conmen, pretending to be different, but who really pursuing the same neoliberal policy, and in fact, being nothing but a front for a cabal of billionaires.
14/
It is very clear, that senior politicians in the Democratic Party, and the UK Labour Party, are seriously compromised, because despite becoming very unpopular, they are ploughing on with the same policy, making them unpopular.
15/
By seriously compromised, I mean they have jumped so far in bed with the billionaires, the big corporations, and the malignant oligarch media owners, that they daren't change direction, in case their paymasters throw them to the wolves.
16/
That the vested interests and oligarchs, pulling the strings of senior Democrats and Labour politicians, have got so much compromising information on them, that they are virtual puppets.

There is a widespread false belief, that creating more renewable energy, and having more electric vehicles is taking climate action.

Unless it is part of a coordinated strategy, to phase out fossil fuels, it is not addressing the climate crisis at all.
1/🧵
In the last 10-20 years, there's been a huge increase in renewable energy, and a huge rise in EVs. Yet emissions are rising, because more fossil fuels than ever are being burned. Energy demand for things like AI and global economy growth, is increasing.
2/
There seems to have been this naive belief, that if we just create more renewable energy, and put most EVs on the road, this will result in a switch from fossil fuels, and emissions will be greatly reduced. I don't believe those pushing this, actually believe it themselves.

I'm sure there are a lot of people, who think they are committed to climate action, who think I am being totally unrealistic, saying we need to stop burning fossil fuels.
1/🧵
Firstly, we've had 33 years since the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, to be systematically phasing out fossil fuel burning and not developing any more reliance on them. Not suddenly stopping, we've had 33 years to do it gradually.
2/
Let's look at the usual arguments, that we need to carry on with the mass burning of fossil fuels, to maintain a civilized lifestyle. I have addressed this on countless previous occasions.

All my life, I have been accused of seeing things too simplistically. No, I'm actually an expert problem solver.

To solve a problem, you have to refine a problem, to its very basics, and if you fail to do address that, then ultimately, you won't solve the problem.
1/🧵
Our modern culture, is nearly all derived from that of several European colonial powers, who developed a certain rapacious mindset and went onto to colonize the world. I'm looking at you Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, and Holland.
2/
At the heart of this rapacious mindset, was just seeing everything, people, the natural world and its resources, as just commodities to be exploited for profit.

Other cultures ruled by powerful individuals, did this to an extent, but not on this scale, and focus.

"The UK is using Brexit to weaken crucial environmental protections"

This raises serious questions about Keir Starmer's opposition to rejoining EU, and whether he is being controlled or constrained by powerful vested interests.

1/🧵theguardian.com/environment/20…
From since well before the Brexit vote, I made it very clear on the Guardian comments sections, that what motivated those funding the Brexit campaign, was primarily removing EU environmental regulations i.e. to weaken them, to profit from it.
2/
The Tories lied about Brexit, falsely claiming that these EU water, air and other environmental regulations, would just be copied and pasted into UK law. This didn't happen as claimed, and environment regulations, were being covertly weakened.

"How can England possibly be running out of water?"

This crisis, this emergency, connected to the climate and ecological crisis, is primarily a crisis of leadership. Our modern politicians/governments, are totally unfit to lead/govern.

1/🧵theguardian.com/news/ng-intera…
Our fake leaders, because they are not real leaders, but corporate and oligarch shills, are fixated on only one thing, economic growth, which primarily benefits the very rich, at the cost of the longer term viability of our societies/civilization. They don't care about that.
2/
All this has been very foreseeable. In 2013, former Environment Minister, Richard Benyon wrote about it, and said in 2012, when he was minister, just before the 2012 Olympics, that we were weeks from a national water shortage emergency.

Can I make something clear about this thread. I was primarily talking about people in positions of great power, who are never held to account, or examined closely.

I gave an example of 2 mundane fraudsters, simply to illustrate that such people exist. It wasn't about them.
1/🧵
The problem we have, is that it has almost never happened, where a senior political fraudster, has been totally unmasked, in the manner of these 2 common fraudsters I used to illustrate, how totally disingenuous people, do exist.
2/
Let me give an example. Donald Trump, trying to get Barack Obama, Joe Biden and the Clintons prosecuted. If Trump was honest, and he is certainly not, he'd want to make dishonesty and lying in public office, seriously illegal.
