This is the #1 climatologist in the world: James Hansen.
He’s spent 50 years studying what humans are doing to the climate.
He's gone out on a limb time and time again - and been proven right.
His message? It’s far worse than they’re telling you. 🧵
Hansen grew up poor on a small farm in Iowa.
He saved up enough to attend university, studied physics and - by chance - came under the wing of space scientist James Van Allen.
That’s how he ended up in astrophysics.
Hansen earned a NASA scholarship.
At first, he studied the atmosphere of Venus. What he found was a warning to us Earthlings: Venus is a hellscape because of a runaway greenhouse effect.
Our atmosphere matters more than we realise.
So Hansen turned his focus homeward.
At NASA he helped build one of the first climate models, giving humanity a new way to see its own future.
By 1981, he was leading NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies.
He was one of the first scientists to publicly warn what humanity is doing to our climate.
In 1988, he testified to the US Senate that climate change was real, human-driven, dangerous and already heating the Earth.
It was a turning point in global awareness - and he was right.
But speaking the truth has a price.
The George W Bush administration banned him from speaking to the press - Hansen spoke out about that too.
When Obama pushed the Keystone XL pipeline, Hansen got arrested protesting outside the White House.
Through it all, he kept publishing groundbreaking science.
He’s in his 80s now, but his recent work may be his most alarming yet.
And he’s taken the all-too-unusual step of writing a plain-language newsletter to explain it.
CO₂ has a bigger impact than many scientists thought.
Heating will be on the high end of expectations, threatening organised global society.
His conclusion rests on 3 lines of evidence:
1⃣ “Paleoclimate data”, which is evidence from Earth’s past: ice cores, sediments, fossils.
They show that relatively small changes in greenhouse gases once caused huge swings in climate.
2⃣ Recent observations.
Satellite data from CERES reveal the Earth is absorbing much more energy than models predicted. That means the planet is heating faster than we realised.
3⃣ Climate models.
Updated runs confirm what paleoclimate and satellites are saying. Hansen says past estimates of climate sensitivity were too low. More CO₂ means much more heating to come.
Why? In part because of aerosols.
Air pollution has been shielding the planet from the sun more than we thought. As we clean our air (a good thing for health), this hidden cooling vanishes.
Hansen calls it a “Faustian pact”.
So what does Hansen say we must do now?
Rapidly phase out fossil fuels. 2050 is too late.
Deploy clean energy at scale, now.
Remove CO₂ already in the atmosphere.
These are huge challenges that require huge resources and focus. Humanity’s future depends on it.
And we must act globally - because physics doesn’t care about borders.
"We are damned fools" for our failure to act so far.
Hansen has dedicated his life to warning us.
From building the first climate models, to testifying in Congress, to being arrested in protest, to publishing in his 80s...
His message:
The crisis is worse than we thought. But it’s not too late to avert the very worst outcomes.

The battle for the future of humanity is being fought within one family.
On one side: a government minister.
On the other: his cousin, an XR activist.
They survived Norway's worst recent trauma together.
Now they’re on opposite sides of the country's oil war.🧵
Andreas Bjelland Eriksen and his younger cousin Vebjørn Bjelland Berg survived Anders Breivik's massacre together on Utoya Island. That bond forged in grief binds them.
But now Norway's rapacious appetite for fossil fuels is killing far more people than Breivik did.
Today, Eriksen serves as Norway’s environment minister in a supposedly centre‑left government that continues the "moral and economic madness" of expanding oil drilling in the Arctic.
Still reeling from @EvanHD's remarks on @BBCPM yesterday.
It looks like the BBC are going to gaslight us all the way to extinction.
But first, some history. 🧵
In 2015, the BBC reported scientists saying that most of the world's fossil fuel reserves needed to stay in the ground if dangerous global heating was to be avoided (and of course there should have been no new sources of oil, gas or coal).
In 2021, the BBC reported that most oil & gas reserves and almost all coal had to remain in the ground to keep global heating below the (actually very unsafe) limit of 1.5C - and of course no new oil, gas or coal.
WHAT YOU'RE NOT BEING TOLD ABOUT HEATHROW EXPANSION 🧵
Keir Starmer wrote the tweet below two months after Ella Kissi-Debrah, pictured above, became the first person in the UK to have air pollution listed as a cause of death by the coroner.
In fact, air pollution is a factor in many deaths.
🚫 Air pollution particles from jet engines are so tiny that they infiltrate lungs, brains, and other organs, causing heart disease, strokes, asthma like Ella had, and even dementia.
Heathrow expansion will increase these pollutants, harming many people living near the airport.
One man - @JonFullerGreen - has performed an invaluable but soul-destroying service for more than 5 years by monitoring the climate and nature coverage in the billionaire press.
As he hands this work over to others, here are his reflections. 🧵
“These newspapers will never report on the greatest human suffering caused by climate breakdown - the over 1,000 infants killed every day by the increased spread of disease in our rapidly heating world.
"Data from the WHO, the Lancet and others shows that the most vulnerable children on the planet are killed slowly - typically over 3 to 5 days. Such is the scale of depravity of editors and owners, they never call for dynamic action to reduce the number of children killed...
BREAKING: Dr Patrick Hart is the first working GP to be sent to prison for nonviolent direct action. Sentenced to 12 months for a @JustStop_Oil action against @exxonmobil petrol pumps.
Why did he do it?
Because he's seen children die at the hands of the fossil fuel industry.
Dr Hart has been a law-abiding citizen all his life, not even receiving a parking ticket until he took direct action.
What would drive someone like him to break the law?
The knowledge that laws can be unjust and patients will no longer live and die in dignity globally.
Why break the law?
Because to have a chance of waking humanity from its sleepwalk towards catastrophe, we must challenge social norms.
Billions of lives are at stake if we continue on our present path. People of conscience must step up and take action.
