ANZ accidentally laid people off by automated email. (yes, seriously)

Staff got “exit dates” and laptop return instructions… before anyone told them they were fired.

The story gets EVEN WILDER than this.... 🧵👇
The HR bot leaked layoff notices to 300+ managers.
👇👇👇
People thought it was a glitch… and when they asked for support- HR handed out psychologist hotlines instead of answers. (yes seriously... this happened.)

ANZ is one of Australia’s “Big Four” banks. 2/6 Image
The Psychologist thing is not even the craziest part...

The HR service used by ANZ is ServiceNow -- and from their own website on 7/21/25:

Challenges of organisations in the ANZ HR landscape
HR departments across ANZ are under increasing pressure to modernise employee experiences while cutting operational costs. Fragmented legacy systems, manual onboarding processes, and inefficient service delivery models often hinder workforce satisfaction and compliance. The benefits of transforming HR operations through automation and self-service models have never been clearer: improved employee engagement, reduced time-to-resolution, and data-driven decision-making.

Email from ANZ's acting group executive for retail banking, Bruce Rush addressing the layoff email:

How did this happen? The email layoff chain probably went something like this:

HR entered “end date” in SAP SuccessFactors

ServiceNow HRSD lifecycle workflow saw the date → triggered “exit event”

Auto-email went to affected staff before managers could speak to them.

The error likely occurred due to a misconfiguration or lack of synchronization between the automated workflow and the human-led notification process.

You can’t make this up:
– Bot fires staff
– HR hands out therapist hotlines
– Execs scramble to catch up

You couldn’t dream up a darker corporate comedy. 6/6

HOLY
Read this twice:

• Employment gains are now just 35,000 jobs/month the last 3 months... a stark drop from 123,000 a year ago.

• Entry-level job listings are down 15%, while applications are up 30%.

• 41% of 2024 grads are underemployed and 58% are still job hunting.

• New grads face a “freezing” market... fewer postings, fewer internships, and 5.8% unemployment.

• By 2030, 70% of skills will transform and 10% of jobs didn’t exist 25 years ago.

Here’s a stat nobody wants to say out loud...

If you’re laid off after 50, there’s a 1 in 4 chance you will never work again.

Not retire.
Not take a break.
Never. 🧵 Image
24% of Americans laid off after age 50 never find another job.

-per WSJ (and this was a study from 2022)

How bad is it now?
The “jobs boom” didn’t happen.
It was a typo.

Nobody cares if the unemployment rate is 4.2% when you can’t even get an interview for a job you’re qualified for.

The ‘strong labor market’ is a lie. 🧵
Tell me… how many people in your network are months deep into job searches, sending 100+ apps, zero interviews?
That gap between jobs “data” and “reality” is everything.

The revisions prove the numbers can’t be trusted.

Your lived experience proves the narrative can’t be trusted either.

What if ghost jobs were illegal?

If the PROPOSED Truth in Job Advertising and Accountability Act (TJAAA) passes, they’re gone:

• No fake “we’re hiring” posts
• Salary ranges in every posting
• 90-day max... no more evergreens
• Fines up to $200K per fake listing

A compliance nightmare for job boards and the Fortune 500. But if passed- major win for job seekers.
The proposed Truth in Job Advertising and Accountability Act is a proposed federal bill that targets “ghost jobs” - listings posted with no real hiring intent.

It would set national rules for job ads, add pay & AI transparency, and create real penalties for fake postings. Still in proposal stage, but could reshape hiring.
Analyses show about 1 in 5 job postings are ghost jobs- and some surveys put it closer to 40%.

Fake listings waste time, harvest data, and make companies look like they’re growing.

This bill would make every posting real, funded, and trackable... with penalties that hurt.
