I disagree. Transgenderism is inherently coercive and, in many states, has the full force of civil rights law that makes "affirmation" a legal requirement. The entire premise is to demand that others deny reality, and, eventually, these questions require a public decision.
Deirdre McCloskey is a good example. Under DC law, his employer is required to affirm that he is a woman, although he is, in fact, a man. Even if McCloskey does not seem coercive in his personal behavior, the underlying concept eventually requires a public consensus—not to mention the fact that transgender identity operates on the principle of social contagion, which means that men such as McCloskey are setting an example that is not only destructive for them, but destructive for others. Even if you're a Lockean liberal, you'd have to concede that Locke and the founders believed that right existed in accordance with virtue. Only a libertarian, who has shed half of that pair, could argue that men who masquerade as woman is a "natural right."
I asked this question, which, thus far, has remained unanswered, because I suspect that McCloskey's colleagues will not answer it—giving the lie to the idea that transgenderism is not coercive.
The better question is, what did you conserve? We are correcting for the failures of your generation, which was unable to defend the institutions from ideological capture. I will put my practical accomplishments against yours any day—and won’t even prorate for age.
And don’t lecture me about fundraising. I know for a fact that you have bilked donor dollars with the best of them, whereas I tell supporters that if I’m not delivering the most value per dollar of any organization in their portfolio, don’t give me support. They know I deliver.
Jonah helped argue us into the Iraq War, tanked the reputation of a great magazine, has spent a full decade in Trump psychosis, defended precisely zero institutions from ideological capture, and now throws cheap shots from even cheaper seats. Moral high ground, denied.
EXCLUSIVE: @MarathonPetroCo, America's largest oil refiner, removed the "safety" metric from its bonus compensation formula—and replaced it with "DEI." Then, in the following years, the company saw a spate of accidents, explosions, and deaths.
This is a scandal. 🧵
The story begins in 2021, when Marathon Petroleum's then-CEO Mike Hennigan wrote an all-staff email announcing that it was removing the "Marathon Safety Performance Index" from its annual cash bonus program, and adding a new "Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion component."
As part of its new DEI program, Marathon Petroleum implemented racial quotas, which are a violation of the Civil Rights Act, and encouraged employees to discriminate on the basis of race—they even wrote it down with specific numbers.
Sad news, but a good reminder that conservatives need to do more than put Machiavelli in their Great Books programs; they actually need to take Machiavelli's ideas seriously and understand that power is required to preserve republican liberties and virtues.
The "DEI administrator wiping out the leadership of a conservative books program at a university in Oklahoma" story is almost too on-the-nose as a didactic story, but it's a reminder that DEI will cannibalize liberal arts education, unless defenders of that education abolish DEI.
For years, Frey condescended to those who made the argument for political reform, believing that if you are a "nice conservative," the Left will leave you alone. It's like the old line, "you might not be interested in political power, but political power is interested in you."
EXCLUSIVE: According to a whistleblower, @LockheedMartin awarded employee bonuses “on the basis of their skin color alone and contrary to documented performance." In one case, the company forced managers to remove 18 whites from the bonus list and replace them with 18 "POC."
🧵
The story begins in December 2022, when executives told the whistleblower that his recommended bonus list had too many white employees on it. A senior executive, now in charge of F-35 engineering, told the whistleblower that his selections needed to "fit in the box."
Immediately afterwards, a human resources manager was more explicit, demanding that the team remove whites from the list and replace them with minorities, admitting that "increasing POC for Comp Adder will result in removing equal count of non-minority."
EXCLUSIVE: @RK_Thorpe and I have obtained internal documents from Harvard revealing that the university deliberately penalizes white men in hiring and would virtually eliminate supposed "oppressor" groups from certain occupations.
Inside Harvard's discrimination machine. 🧵
This is one of Harvard's affirmative action plans, which sets aggressive racial targets, including increasing the number of minorities in certain occupations by nearly 500% and reducing the number of white men across dozens of occupations—which, @MorenoffDan says, is illegal.
Faculty hiring is also engineered to filter out white men. Harvard's official guidebook instructs departments to favor "women and minorities" at each step in the process, telling officials to monitor applicants by race and to move white men to the back of the reading pile.
EXCLUSIVE: Columbia professor Jennifer Manly marched with pro-Hamas encampment leaders and, according to public records, has been a recipient of $100 million in taxpayer funding for CRT-style research, which claims that racism causes Alzheimer's in black people.
🧵
This is Columbia University in April 2024. Jennifer Manly marched with pro-Hamas protestors and stood in a human blockade intending to prevent administrators from dismantling the unauthorized encampments, which shut down classes and was the base for illegal building occupations.
But the real scandal is that Manly has been a recipient of more than $100 million in taxpayer funds for so-called "social determinants of health" research, which posits that racism, sexism, and homophobia cause brain disease in minorities—which critics call pseudoscience.
