I suspect that when she was assaulted and held hostage for three hours, with ransom demands issued for her safe departure from the building by a mob of male trans activists at SCSU, none of whom were disciplined in any way by SCSU administration, which issued a statement in solidarity with her captors, had an effect on her understanding of what she was up against.
I think during those hours, the exhibition made inescapably clear that the people she was up against were narcissistic and violent men determined to destroy her right to speak, that imposing a presumption that falsifying reality is required of everyone was how they won in the past, and that breaking that presumption was fundamental to resolving this issue.

I'm not a fan of every statement Gaines has made on subjects other than men in women's sports -- but on that particular subject she is 100 percent right, her conduct has been 100 percent righteous and courageous, and her detractors are useful idiots for with one of the most toxic social movements in American history

Leta's account of Gaines' reception among girl athletes is a genuine contribution to understanding. I'd personally prefer if Gaines was a strictly single-issue activist who eschewed partisan politics -- but the admiration she's earned from those on whose behalf she is fighting is fully earned
