FLASH: Judge erupts at hearing as Justice Dept reveals dismissal of yet another recent DC criminal case
Judge Zia Farriqui: “We’re past the point of Constitutional crisis”
“embarrassment & shame for the govt”
“This is just a rush to get stats on Twitter or truth social”
Judge slams Justice Dept for being “past the Rubicon”.. as they dismiss Fed charges against Edward Dana, who was charged with threat against President
Dana recently broke a light fixture, was drunk, claimed to police to be in Russian mafia, said he’d fight fascism even if it meant to kill a Pres., per charges
He was held in jail a week. Feds dismissed charge 30 mins before hearing today
Judge apologizes to Dana for his treatment by feds and uncorks a 10 minute, raised-voice stemwinder at Justice Dept prosecutor … saying “We’re acting like this is all normal”
Judge says Trump Admin “is playing cops and robbers like children”
Judge Farriqui about Wash DC right now: “What’s to prevent people from just getting rounded up off the streets?”
Judge: The Feds have time to “collect stats and have press releases”… but where’s the time for people illegally detained?
Judge notes have frequently grand juries have rejected Justice Dept indicted in past couple of weeks.
He blasts Justice Dept for saying it’s “working out the kinks” in its work. Judge says “These are people with names and rights!”
Judge orders Justice Dept to make filing by 5p to explain its handling of Dana’s case and how it’s going to fix problems in the future
Judge Farriqui: “It’s September 4.. as of now we still have a Constitutional democracy”
Judge Farriqui about Justice Dept:
“It’s not that they’re ‘losing credibility’…. We’re past that point”
Judge Farriqui about the wave of cases filed during Trump police surge in DC,
“the volume of ‘motions to dismiss’ raise grave concern”
“People like Mr Dana are suffering the consequences”
Judge to Justice Dept: “You created this mess”
“Too many misfires”
He says Feds are operating under the concept of “we’ll arrest people .. then see what happens”
Defense attorney spoke briefly in court and said the criminal case was ridiculous
She said “even a 15 year old would know” that this case was not a criminal threat against the President
Judge asks aloud: “What amount of money undoes the harm?” To those charged in these dismissed cases
He suggests to defense attorney that she seek remedy against government for the case
About the military who are now being designated to help the U.S. Attorney office in DC handle the wave of cases in this federal crackdown in DC……. Judge wonders why none are being deployed to help the federal defenders manage an “exhausting” caseload ?
Judge about people whose cases are being dismissed:
The arrest “will be on their record… it’ll impact the arc of someone’s life”
Prosecutor tells judge that the case was initially authorized by a superior
(More)
Judge then slams the US attorney for dc and head of its criminal division for not showing up in court to explain the decision in Dana’s case
Judge: they have time for press conferences and tweets.. but not for this
Finally.. judge looked at Edward Dana and said “the government’s message to people who look like Mr Dana is … ‘be very afraid!”
Judge says.. “I’m afraid right now”
Pardon the quick-finger typo on judge's name

STAND BY: Judge Jia Cobb takes the bench shortly here in DC.
Lisa Cook is challenging her firing from Federal Reserve Board by Trump
Cook is not in courtroom. It's her attorneys Norm Eisen and Abbe Lowell
Lisa Cook's legal team will argue:
"This case challenges President Trump’s unprecedented and illegal attempt to remove Governor Cook from her position which, if allowed to occur, would the first of its kind in the Board’s history. It would subvert the Federal Reserve Act, which explicitly requires a showing of 'cause' for a Governor’s removal, which an unsubstantiated allegation about private mortgage applications submitted by Governor Cook prior to her Senate confirmation is not"
Judge Jia Cobb is a 2021 appointee to the court.
Cobb has previously decried "misinformation" about January 6, the surge in political violent threats and election misinformation from the bench
Amid Trump clampdown in Wash, D.C., a woman spent 6 days in jail awaiting her release for allegedly spitting on a National Zoo police sergeant.
Even though the feds did NOT seek to have her held in pretrial detention
Her defense lawyer filed a motion reading "HELP!!!"

Kristal Rios Esquival was arrested Aug 20 after she was stopped allegedly making an unlawful entry to in a staff entrance to a birdhouse at the Nat'l Zoo. Feds say she spat on a sergeant & made "physical contact" w/ officer leg
Per judge in her case, an odyssey ensued in jail
Per the judge, "Ms. Rios-Esquivel should have been presented to a Magistrate Judge on August 22, 2025. However, federal authorities did not bring Ms. Rios-Esquivel to court until August 25, 2025"

Judge Reyes notes this is a unique (if not unprecedented) case
