Apple cider vinegar can shed ~7 pounds a month and reduce insulin resistance, a new study demonstrates.

(🧵1/7)Image
This study was published last year in the prestigious British Medical Journal.

It involved 120 people, giving them either:

◇ 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (group 1)
◇ 2 tsp (group 2)
◇ 3 tsp (group 3)
◇ Placebo (group 4)

No other changes in diet or supplements.

(2/7) Image
At baseline, all groups were equal in all measures.

They looked at:

➥ Weight
➥ BMI
➥ Waist circumfrence
➥ Hip circumfrence
➥ Body fat %
➥ Fasting blood sugar
➥ Lipids

(3/7) Image
Apple cider vinegar improved ALL measures.

After 12 weeks, even 1 teaspoon led to 5 kg (11 lb) of weight loss.

3 teaspoons led to 7 kg (>15 lb!) of weight loss, around 2-3 kg a month.

All of the apple cider vinegar groups also had lower BMI and lower waist circumfrence, so this was mainly belly fat.

(4/7)Image
Apple cider vinegar also reduced body fat %.

Those taking 3 teaspoons shaved 2% off.

People without it increased body fat %.

Again, this is with no change in diet or exercise.

(5/7)
Apple cider vinegar also improved insulin resistance.

1 tsp ➞ dropped blood sugar by >5
2 tsp ➞ dropped it by >8
3 tsp ➞ dropped it by >10

No change for placebo.

ACV also reduced triglycerides and cholesterol levels.

(6/7) Image
The reason apple cider vinegar is so helpful for metabolism is because it contains acetic acid (acetate).

Acetate has a unique metabolism in comparison to other fuels, disproportionately increasing the AMP/ATP ratio in the cytosol of cells.

This turns on a master kinase known as AMPK, which:

➜ Ramps up metabolic enzymes
➜ Turns down fat production
➜ Increases uptake of glucose
➜ Reduces inflammation
➜ Enhances mitochondrial function

and other protective effects.

AMPK is actually a primary target of the blockbuster diabetes drug metformin.

Vinegar does it and also doesn't inhibit your mitochondria in the process like metformin does.

Magnesium rapidly (15 mins) and completely stops headaches, including migraines, in the vast majority of people.

(🧵1/8)Image
We have three oldish studies on this protocol, which is 1 gram of magnesium sulfate administered intravenously.

That's around 200 mg of elemental magnesium.

In this first paper, 40 people came to the clinic with various forms of headache, including chronic migraines.

(2/8) Image
Magnesium reduced headache / migraine severity by >50% in 80% of people.

In the people that it did help, 80% of them had complete elimination of pain.

In 15 minutes.

Collagen can reverse aging in the brain, even in small amounts, according to a recent study.

(🧵1/7)Image
This study was published in 2019 in the Journal of Nutrients.

Healthy patients age 49-63 received just 5g of collagen a day, a bit over a teaspoon.

They got imaging on their brains to see the structural impacts collagen would have, along with tests on memory and learning.

(2/7)Image
Collagen increased white matter in the brain after just 4 weeks.

White matter is the tissue in brain that mainly reflects the axons of neurons - the part that transmits signals to other neurons.

This indicates much better overall brain health.

Fatty liver was completely reversed using one simple, cheap supplement, in a fascinating study.

(🧵1/8)Image
Image
This was a small experiment done in the late 90s, and somehow it's never been investigated since clinically.

They gave children 2-6g of taurine per day for several months, in some cases over a year.

(2/8) Image
Taurine quickly reduced markers of liver damage.

The levels of ALT dropped dramatically - a key blood marker of liver damage.

This was true whether or not the children lost weight along the way.

This is the MOST important thing to understand about health.

The antioxidant system protects you from every disease + aging.

But antioxidants aren't just about berries and chocolate.

Here's what you need to know to make yours in the top 1%

(🧵1/26)Image
Why do we need antioxidants?

Every moment we are exposed to what are called reactive oxygen species (ROS).

These are molecules related to oxygen that are highly reactive, and:

◈ Damage every structural component of the cell (proteins, lipids, DNA)
◈ Dysregulates cell signaling
◈ Turns on inflammation
◈ Shuts down energy production

Literally every single disease is driven by these processes - collectively known as oxidative stress.

I can't stress enough how important it is.

(2/26)
Where do these ROS come from?

1. The mitochondria during energy metabolism (main source)
2. Heavy metals / toxins
3. Inflammation
4. Radiation

and some other sources as well.

You will have ROS production, it's inevitable.

The question is how to limit their excessive production and

Luckily, we have a network of multiple different parts that protects us against them.

Let's get into some of the key nutrients

Vitamin C can reduce cortisol by ~40%, according to a critical new study.

(🧵1/7)Image
This study was published last year, examining the effects of 1g of vitamin C per day in people with high stress hormones.

Vitamin C is known to be stored in the adrenal glands and released in times of stress.

A few previous studies suggested adding vitamin C could lower cortisol.

(2/7)Image
There were 3 groups.

Group 1: high cortisol + normal DHEA-S

Group 2: high cortisol + high DHEA-S

Group 3: normal cortisol + high DHEA-S

DHEA is an anti-stress hormone, and its levels rise in the early stress response to balance the effects of high cortisol.

Each group either got 1g of vitamin C or placebo.

Want to live longer? Here are 7 tools shown to extend lifespan in research (🧵1/7):

#1 Glycine + NAC

The combination increases lifespan by ~25%.

As precursors to the master antioxidant glutathione, this combination:

✓ Reduces organ damage
✓ Preserves mitochondrial function

at 1.6 g / kg of food (human equivalent) for each.Image
#2 Aspirin (males only)

Aspirin has multiple actions that prevent the core processes of aging:

◇ Inflammation
◇ Oxidative stress

and has shown benefit in reducing cancer and heart disease in humans.

3.5 mg / kg of food (human equivalent).

Image
#3 Vitamin E

By 40% in males, 14% in females.

It preserved mitochondrial enzymes:

➜ NADH-cytochrome c reductase
➜ Succinate-cytochrome c reductase
➜ Cytochrome oxidase

while increasing the antioxidant SOD enzyme.

More energy, less damage.
