This gambler broke football.

Tony Bloom built the world’s biggest betting syndicate. Then he gambled on his boyhood club, Brighton.

Turning them from broke and homeless to an $860M empire.

His strategic edge? A brutal system nobody else trusted.

A thread. 🧵 Image

In 1997, Brighton were on life support.

– Bankrupt
– Homeless (stadium sold by former owners)
– Forced to play 70 miles away at a borrowed ground in Gillingham
– Fans furious, attendances collapsing

Most clubs would have folded.
Enter Tony Bloom.

A Brighton boy. Poker player. Professional sports gambler.

And creator of one of the world’s most successful betting syndicates: Starlizard.

His fortune came from algorithms that outperformed bookmakers. Image

Traditional gamblers trusted instinct.

Bloom built models.

His systems analysed:

– Weather conditions
– Player fitness
– Tactical setups
– Even referee biases

The aim: find “mispriced” bets where odds undervalued reality.
By the mid-2000s, Bloom’s syndicate was handling billions in bets annually.

It became the biggest private betting operation in the world.

But Bloom’s boldest wager came in 2009:

He bought Brighton for £93M.
At the time, it looked insane.

– No stadium
– Stuck in League One (3rd tier)
– Rivals with far larger budgets

The football world laughed.

But Bloom wasn’t here to play the old game.
He treated football like a math problem.

– Out went the traditional scouting network.
– In came proprietary analytics that spotted undervalued players years before rivals.
– Recruitment became systematic: buy low, develop, sell high.

The model worked.
Brighton climbed to the Premier League.

Once there, they didn’t just survive.

They overperformed against giants with 10x bigger budgets.
By 2023:

– £122.8M profit (highest in PL history)
– First-ever European qualification in 122 years
– Consistent mid-table PL finishes despite tiny wage bill

Systems > Spending.
The transfers are staggering:

– Moisés Caicedo: bought for £4M → sold £115M
– Marc Cucurella: £15M → £60M
– Alexis Mac Allister: £7M → £35M
– Yves Bissouma: £15M → £25M

Not Barca, not Madrid, not Man Utd.

Brighton - became Europe’s most profitable talent factory. Image

Today, Brighton is valued at £584M.

That’s a 528% return on Bloom’s original investment.

But his edge isn’t just buying cheap and selling high.

It's not even the David Beckham signs Messi at Inter Miami story, nor is it Ryan Reynold's Wrexham AFC.
Bloom systematised EVERYTHING:

– Wage structures
– Transfer negotiations
– Performance bonuses
– Ticketing & stadium revenue

Every process optimised. Every inefficiency removed.
While most clubs still rely on gut feelings and instincts...

Bloom automated the predictable. And, this lesson isn’t just for football.

Bloom proved:

– Data beats intuition
– Systems beat chaos
– Optimisation beats tradition

That’s how a gambler broke football.
And it’s how businesses can break industries.

– Stop relying on instinct.
– Systematise everything.
– Automate relentlessly.
– Optimise constantly.

That’s how you beat the odds. Image

GST 2.0 was supposed to be boring.

Instead, they cut taxes across healthcare, insurance, daily goods, agriculture…

…and raised them on gutkha, tobacco.

All you need to know about the new “Gabbar Singh Tax” 2025 🧵👇 Image

First shocker:

Life & Health Insurance now have 0% GST.

Term life, ULIPs, endowment, family floaters, senior citizen covers - everything.

Insurance just got cheaper for 1.4B+ Indians.

A massive push for financial security. Image

- 3 rare disease & cancer drugs = NIL GST

20,000,000 voices.
90 minutes that carry 100 years of history.

Two colour combinations:
Green and Maroon vs Red and Gold.

And a rivalry older than most countries.

The Kolkata Derby is much more than just Asia’s biggest football clash: 🧵 Image
Image
To you, it may look like “just another football match.”

To me, it is my identity, my religion, my everything.

This Derby decides who your friends are, your festivals, even your family fights.

It’s survival, legacy, defiance. Not just sport.
This rivalry was born in 1921.

But its fire came from India's Independence in 1947.

The Partition split Bengal.

Migrants from East Bengal found a home in red & gold. Natives held onto green & maroon.

And football became the stage where history replayed itself, every game.

Trump and Putin just met in Alaska.

All show, no deal, and the talks ended without a Ukraine ceasefire or deal.

But the real impact of this failed summit stretches far beyond Anchorage.

Here’s what it really means for the world: 🧵 Image
The summit was hastily arranged, with little groundwork.

Normally, high-stakes diplomacy comes after months of preparation.

This one looked more like theatre than negotiation.

And in geopolitics, theatre has consequences.
Trump rolled out the red carpet. He clapped and shook Putin’s hand twice.

They even rode together in the US Presidential limo “The Beast.”

For Putin, isolated since 2022, this was already a victory.

They were being welcomed on equal footing with the US president.

In 1929, a small factory in Vile Parle, Mumbai, began making biscuits.

No one knew it would one day feed BILLIONS. Survive wars. Become the top-selling biscuit in the world.

On the brink of our 78th Independence Day, let's reminisce Parle-G - the “biscuit of independence.” 🧵 Image
Image
Back then, the Indian biscuit market was dominated by expensive British imports.

They were a luxury for the elite.

Most Indians couldn’t afford them, and local manufacturing was almost non-existent.

That’s where Mohanlal Dayal Chauhan, founder of Parle, saw its opening. Image

In its early years, Parle made confectionery and candies.

But by 1939, they launched a glucose biscuit.

Affordable, nutritious, and designed for the masses.

It was positioned as a "chai-time" companion rather than a snack for the privileged. Image
