An open letter to Speaker Mike Johnson

Sir, I applaud you for calling the US and its leaders to “turn the rhetoric down.”

1/ Image
2/ On NBC, you said, “We've got to turn the rhetoric down, we got to turn the temperature down in this country, we need leaders of all parties on both sides to call that out.”
3/ And at the Capitol: “We need every political figure, we need everyone who has a platform to say this loudly and clearly: we can settle disagreements and disputes in a civil manner.”
4/ We are indeed awash in uncivil and unethical rhetoric, which manipulates, inflames and divides. It is easily recognizable by its expressions:
• Insults and dehumanizing
• Caricaturing and name-calling
• Fabrications and lies
• Willful distortion of information
5/ • Misrepresenting the views of opponents
• Rushing to judgment
• Prevaricating
• Damning entire groups for the behaviors of a few
• Projecting one’s bad behaviors on to one’s opponent
• Threatening one’s opponent
6/ Turning the rhetoric down necessarily requires the rejection and condemnation of these and other toxic forms of communication.
7/ We’ve heard your call to turn the rhetoric down before. You said exactly the same thing on the Today Show in July, 2024, immediately after the first attempt on Mr. Trump’s life.
8/ At that time you also said: “We’re all Americans, and we have to treat each other with respect.”

And: “We need leaders of both parties, on both sides, to call that out and make sure that happens.”
9/ You and others even started a group that you called The Honor and Civility Caucus.

But nothing happened. The rhetoric never changed. On the contrary, it seems to have intensified. I can think of no leaders on either side who ever called it out.
10/ I therefore appeal to you, this time, to make good on your words. Turn the rhetoric down. Use the power and influence of your office to call out and denounce all forms of poisonous rhetoric, whenever it occurs and whoever speaks, writes, or XTweets it.
11/ Refuse to excuse it. Call it out - and call your colleagues to call it out - across the political spectrum. Wherever it rears its ugly head.
12/ Begin with the Chief Executive, whose rhetoric effectively sets the tone for our civic discourse. Condemn divisive rhetoric unequivocably, in the Executive branch and when voiced by your Congressional colleagues.
13/ You have the power, in this pivotal moment, to initiate what you call for. You can begin to turn the rhetoric down by setting a courageous example. I hope you’ll rise to the occasion.
14/ “Use your platform and say it loudly and clearly.” Set the precedent. Show us that you’re a man of your word and not another politician of hollow pronouncements. Do something this time.
15/ Give us reason to hope that your call to turn the rhetoric down is not just another shallow exercise in political theater.

Education as an Antidote to Violence

I’ve been saddened to see some of my friends repeating the false claim that colleges “radicalize” young people into violence.

The truth is exactly the opposite.

1/n Image
2/ Research consistently shows that education reduces crime. More schooling lowers the likelihood of arrests, convictions, and incarceration for violent offenses, including homicide.
3/ Prison data: Fewer than 4% of state prisoners hold a college degree, while over 30% never finished high school (Bureau of Justice Statistics; Prison Policy Initiative).

Americans are divided like never before. The right hates the left, and the left hates the right. Republicans vs. Democrats. Blacks vs. whites. Christians vs. atheists. The list goes on.

1/n Image
2/ Sometimes it’s hard to even recognize your own friends when they openly call for violence — and that’s happening on both sides.
3/ How did we get here? I have my theories. But let’s focus on a different question: who benefits the most from a divided America? That’s not even a theory — it’s a fact. China and russia.

The Nord Stream saga.

For two years, the world has speculated: Who blew up the Nord Stream pipeline? Russia accused the U.S. The U.S. pointed at russia. Conspiracy theories flourished — each more imaginative than the last.

2/ Now, reports suggest that it was not the CIA, not British divers — but an elite Ukrainian team that carried out the sabotage in September 2022.
3/ Here’s the outline of the story:
•A group allegedly set out on a rented yacht from Germany’s Baltic coast. Onboard: military-trained divers, forged passports, and explosives.
•They sailed quietly to the vicinity of Bornholm island in Denmark.

Many Americans have complained that the allocated $400 million in aid to Ukraine is “very little.” I disagree. That number may look modest, but it’s almost as high as $500 million Donald Trump is on track to spend on his golf trips during his presidency.

1/n Image
2/ GAO audit: Just four Mar-a-Lago trips in 2017 cost U.S. taxpayers ~$13.6M total (~$3.4M per trip) when you include Air Force aircraft, Coast Guard boats, and overtime.
3/ Golf frequency: Watchdogs report Trump made 62 golf-course visits by July 21, 2025 - well above the pace of his first term. Each visit brings multimillion-dollar security and travel costs.

Russian attack on Poland achieved several objectives at once.

First — testing NATO’s “red lines.” The Kremlin knows well that the West’s main weakness is not the lack of weapons or finances, but political will.

2/ Ideally, Moscow wants to prove the North Atlantic Alliance’s inability to act as a collective institution. This test is aimed personally at Donald Trump, who has repeatedly expressed skepticism about U.S. commitments to its allies.
3/ For Putin, it would be a victory to show the world that the American president is not willing to take risks for Warsaw or Vilnius.

After watching the full video of how Iryna Zarutska was murdered, I couldn’t hold back tears. It made me sick to my stomach.

How is it possible that a man arrested 14 times for armed robbery, assault, and violence was allowed to roam the streets freely? Fourteen times!

1/n Image
2/ It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat — if someone has a record like that, they should never be back on the streets. Period. Every release was another roll of the dice, and this time it cost Iryna her life. That is unthinkable. That is unacceptable.
3/ And let’s talk about hypocrisy. Suddenly, propagandists like Alex Jones, Elon Musk, and Tucker Carlson pretend to care about a Ukrainian life.
