@slate11 @PirateWires I guess that you didn't read the article.

"Assimilate" can mean a lot of things. The Cajuns are distinctive, with their own language, sure, but they also know English and I've never heard anybody doubt their loyalty to America.archive.is/tmxiQ
@slate11 @PirateWires The kind of assimilation that Sagnik Basu is talking about is that of becoming an American in a meaningful sense, somebody whose relationship with America is that one has with one's home and not just that a shopper would have with a shopping mall she was in.
@slate11 @PirateWires Think about some of the recent discussions on Twitter between Indian-Americans and Indians in which the Indians are calling the Indian-Americans "worthless traitors," because we won't advance India's interests at the expense of America, and we're telling them to get a grip.
@slate11 @PirateWires At some point along the way, as we sat in these discussions between the (usually White) Americans and these sub-continental people who look like us, for us "we" came to mean the Americans and not the Indians.
@slate11 @PirateWires Other things tend to happen, too, like my and my French-American mate's growing obsession with Film Noir, Jazz, Westerns, American Victorian architecture, and so many other things, but these are individual preferences, not requirements for Americanness.
@slate11 @PirateWires I don't see how anybody could not love barbecue and Civil War re-enactments, but as far as that goes, it's all good.
@slate11 @PirateWires But if I had entered that discussion with the Indian guys demanding that America be made into expansion space for India's unsustainably growing population and saw them as anything other than outsiders with ridiculous demands, that would not have been cool.

See the difference?

@AGPamBondi Community note currently added ...

"The US Constitution protects most violent speech.

...
@AGPamBondi ...

The Supreme Court ruled it legal to "justify" or celebrate violence or "advocate or teach the duty, necessity, or propriety" of it; but not "incitement" to "imminent" violence (eg telling a mob with weapons to kill someone).

"supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/…

@GodPricker @ThePatriotOasis @MaryAnnAhernNBC He used Covid as an excuse to violate separation of powers (and his oath office) during his first term in office, acting as a dictator, dragged his feet on letting go of the power he lawlessly seized, and then, during his campaign for re-election, bragged about the ...
@GodPricker @ThePatriotOasis @MaryAnnAhernNBC ... authoritarianism that we had already seen out of him. "A strong man for hard times" or something like that.

In a healthy republic, his career would be over at this point. He would have been removed from office for what he did, and yes, for his unrepentant attitude.
@GodPricker @ThePatriotOasis @MaryAnnAhernNBC Anybody who would vote for him in a presidential election would have to either be insane, or in love with the taste of booth leather. He has already told us what his intentions are, and respect for the rule of law is not among them.

@GxnTotingTexan @banteringless "Yeah, I'm probably OK with eliminating student ones."

Yeah. Here's how that would play out: university STEM programs would relocate to countries that didn't try to block access for foreign students. America's lead in these fields would vanish almost overnight.
@GxnTotingTexan @banteringless If you want to sacrifice America's world power status in order to make nice with a xenophobe who chooses to not understand the difference between letting serious students in to study, and granting visas to people with paper degrees who are here to drive down wages ...
@GxnTotingTexan @banteringless ... in a way that only looks good on paper, you're free to be that way. Of course, this proposal will end up DECREASING the number of STEM jobs in America, not increasing it, because fewer students would mean fewer jobs for professors in STEM.

@banteringless Please, no! Not the head bob!

I'm firmly convinced that Indians invented that just to mortally embarrass their America relatives. It is SO cringe!

As for the H1B programs, no, those shouldn't exist.
@banteringless I find that in these discussions, a lot of people persist in refusing to understand the difference between Indian-Americans and Indians.

One can have a name like "Nisha" and still be just as loyal to America as somebody named "Betty."

I wish people would remember that.
@banteringless Both a great many Indians, who seem to expect us to act as some sort of fifth column opening up America to unlimited Indian migration, and to far too many Americans, who just seem to assume that we'd be willing to betray them by agreeing to do such a thing.

@PelliejJ @MrAndyNgo @Reddit @mmfa Oh, my, this again. This reminds me of the time Grok refused to believe in the existence of people who learned Calculus at the age of four, and then in the presence of people with IQs over 160 in Mathematics and Physics departments.
@PelliejJ @MrAndyNgo @Reddit @mmfa People are not standardized, Pella. Some are smarter than others, and some develop skills earlier than others do. Some of those who do, will, regrettably, put those skills to bad use.

There is no conspiracy behind this. Just natural variation.
@PelliejJ @MrAndyNgo @Reddit @mmfa Grok speaks

"The post references a past AI skepticism about exceptional human abilities,"

Grok seriously was being stupid on this point. It was embarrassing.

@golfr121 "People say there preparing for Nuclear War.. how do you prepare for 2 million degree heat. Burns all over your body Radiation that will kill you in days."

By being nowhere near ground zero when the bombs go off, Rob?
@golfr121 Also, if possible, by being below ground in a shelter, at the time. Nuclear weapons are devastatingly effective, but they're not magical devices that will allow one to get around the law of conservation of mass and energy.
@golfr121 You seem to have a view of what they can do that is rooted more deeply in science fiction than it is in science.
