It happened in September of last year, in the midst of the air force bombing of Hezbollah strongholds in Beirut's Dahiyya; several people sneaked into Haret Harik in the Shiite quarter with well-camouflaged packages in their hands. They were fully aware that if Hezbollah members discovered them, they would face the death penalty. Seizing the devices in their possession would cause enormous security damage to the State of Israel.

They crept through narrow alleys, clung to the walls, and hoped that the Mossad case officer, the operator who sent them on the mission, had coordinated with the IDF so that the Air Force would not bomb the route they took to reach the multi-story residential building beneath which Hezbollah's secret main headquarters bunker was located.

The intelligence that reached IDF Unit 8200 at that time indicated that Hassan Nasrallah, the mythical leader of the terrorist organization and the Shiite axis in general, had arranged to meet there with the commander of the Iranian Quds Force in Lebanon, General Abbas Nilfroushan, and with the commander of Hezbollah's southern front, Ali Karki, who had been marked as a possible successor to the leader.

The three were supposed to meet in a bunker that only a few of Hezbollah's security personnel and confidants knew about and were allowed to approach. The men who sneaked into the secret underground compound beneath the building were supposed to place the devices at pre-planned locations. They estimated that the chances of returning safely from the mission were 50-50, since even if they were not caught by Hezbollah members who were roaming the area, there was a significant chance they would be hit by shrapnel from bombs dropped by the Air Force.

A few hours before these brave men set out, a difficult conversation took place between them and their operator. They expressed their readiness to undertake the dangerous and vital mission assigned to them, but they also demanded that the Air Force cease the intense bombings that had particularly affected the entire Dahiyya and Haret Khreik neighborhood during this period.

The Mossad operator convinced them that for the sake of their safety, the Air Force would bomb and even increase the attacks during the operation. This way, he said, Hezbollah security personnel would be forced to take cover and would not prevent them from approaching the bunker, which was physically difficult to access and well-secured on normal days. The Mossad operatives understood and agreed to embark on the dangerous mission, which they carried out perfectly and unharmed under the cover of the heavy bombings.

The equipment that Mossad operatives brought into the region is a story in itself, as if taken from science fiction. Its development was completed in 2022, about a year before that terrible day on October 7, 2023. The Mossad understood that a device was needed that would ensure the achievement of the purpose of a precise attack at varying depths; the need for it arose not only because of Lebanon but mainly because the Mossad was also working to destroy the Iranian nuclear program.

The Defense Ministry's Weapons Development Department collaborated with intelligence and technology personnel to develop the equipment. The Air Force and the defense companies Rafael and Elbit also worked together with them, developing the special precision and deep penetration capabilities of the munitions that the IDF was supposed to drop on the places where the devices would be placed.

The accuracy of the munitions hitting the ground in Dahiyya was critical; on rocky terrain, even a heavy bomb weighing a ton can miss its target if it does not strike the exact route of the tunnel or deviates by even a meter. In such a case, the people in the tunnel would at most be injured. Therefore, it was important to the developers of the equipment and munitions that were created that the bomb hit exactly the target and the purpose would be achieved.

The fact that the Mossad operatives had planted the devices in Dahiyya in advance, in the location that the Intelligence Directorate had indicated as the bunker where Nasrallah would meet with his advisors, made it possible to eliminate the Hezbollah Secretary-General. At 6:20 p.m. on September 27, ten Air Force planes dropped 83 bombs weighing 83 tons each on the area where this underground headquarters was located deep underground. F-15I ("Thunder") planes from the 69th ("Hammers") Squadron participated in the air operation, along with F-16I ("Storm") planes that dropped US-made BLU-109 bombs, known in the Air Force as "Heavy Hail." These bombs were equipped with a target guidance mechanism, in addition to the standard GPS guidance that was in their homing mechanisms.

From the outset, the Air Force's plan was, due to the precision of the homing and penetration mechanisms, to use half the number of bombs that were ultimately dropped—but then-Defense Minister Yoav Galant, when approving the operation, demanded that the number of bombs be doubled to ensure that Nasrallah would not emerge from the incident alive. Along with Nasrallah, Ali Karki, the Iranian general, and about 300 other people were also killed, most of them Hezbollah operatives who were in the vicinity. This bombing and the elimination of the leader of the Shiite organization effectively led to the defeat of Hezbollah.
