OK I finally had time to sit down and watch Hegseth pretend to be George C Scott pretending to be Patton

Cutting through the bullshit: here's what he wants to change (and my analysis as a veteran):
1) Hegseth wants to have the same physical fitness standards for combat arms MOSs (jobs). Currently, women and men have different physical fitness standards

I don't actually hate this. Physical fitness standards should be tooled to the jobs themselves
Observe, however, that Hegseth is getting rid of gender differences but not age differences. 40 year olds will still have a lower physical standard than 18-year-olds

So don't tell me this is about combat readiness, because it's not. It's about reducing women in combat arms
2) A "combat field test" for combat arms MOSs that resembles Army Expert Fitness Test or Marine Corps Combat Fitness Test

Not sure why he changed APFT standards AND introduced a new test, but these are more practical skills than pushups/situps/2 mile run, so: fine. Whatever Participants will start with a one-mile run, then complete dead-stop push-ups (a modified version of the hand-release push up), a 100-meter sprint, lift 16 sandbags onto a 66” tall platform, 50-meter farmers carry with two 40-pound water cans, a 25-meter-high crawl, a 25 meter three-five second rush, and another one-mile run. The seven events that make up the EPFA must be completed within 27:30 minutes for EIB or 30:00 minutes for ESB and EFMB.
The Marine Corps' combat fitness test (CFT), taken every six months, is intended to keep Marines ready for the physical rigors of contemporary combat operations. Individual readiness will be measured by requiring Marines to do the following: Run 880 yards (two laps around a track), simulating movement to contact in battle dress uniform, fast. Lift a 30-pound ammunitions can overhead from shoulder height for max reps for two minutes. Perform a maneuver-under-fire simulated event, a timed 300-yard shuttle run in which Marines are paired up by size and perform the following tasks: sprints, ag...
3) Everyone has to do PT every duty day, which was already a de facto thing but it did allow Hegseth to say "If the Secretary of War can do regular hard PT, so can every member of our joint force" and then presumably cum in his pants, so hooray I guess
4) No more beard profiles. Some men -- mostly Black men -- get serious skin irritation if they shave every day. Nothing says military readiness like open sores and/or kicking out a bunch of trained troops who have a skin condition

This is old news though

military.com/daily-news/202…
5) Bring Back Hazing!

Yes really. "Nasty bullying and hazing" aren't allowed, per Hegseth, but Drill Sergeants are allowed to hit recruits. Verbal abuse is awesome

Because nothing says military readiness like abuse and its consequences

sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
6) No more "toxic leadership" complaints -- or at least, not woke ones

Per Hegseth: "Toxic leadership is promoting destructive ideologies that are an anathema to the constitution and the laws of nature and nature's God."
7) "No Walking on Eggshells Policy"

Troops used to be able to complain to the Inspector General's office if they felt they'd been wronged or discriminated against, but that woke shit is over. No more anonymous complaints, so enjoy getting the shit beat out of you if you complain
If that sounds like carte blanch for officers and NCOs to be racist, sexist, and generally fucked up, don't worry!

Per Hegseth: "being a racist has been illegal in our formation since 1948. The same goes for sexual harassment." This means no enforcement mechanism is necessary
8) Erase records of wrongdoing for "forgivable" infractions

Of course he didn't say what those were, just that we need "risktakeres and aggressive leaders" who, presumably, aren't scared to haze or sexually harass people
9) Merit-based promotions. No more quotas

There were never quotas but who fucking cares, the war on woke does not care about your facts
10) An endorsement of already-enacted policies that ban bitching on social media

This is very funny because if we're truly Retvrning, bitching is a storied and time-honored tradition passed from generation to generation of bored and bitter troops
11) Fewer mandatory powerpoint trainings

OK honestly that's pretty solid. Yes, he probably means anti-sexual-harassment and anti-racism training, and the implications of that are bad, but those training are performative nonsense that don't do anything so whatever, fine
12) Fuck the Geneva Convention

Hegseth: "No more politically correct and overbearing rules of engagement. Just common sense, maximum lethality, and authority for war fighters"
That's it. That's Hegseth's 12-point plan to dewokify the Military. It is, he has declared, "Liberation Day"

Folks, I'm pretty tired of liberation days

Everything is very dumb. The end
Epilogue: here's YouTube's automatic transcript interpreting the post-speech military march's horn section as the words "Heat" and "Oh Yeah"

The "Obama did a coup" thing is a pathetic attempt to distract from growing evidence that Trump and Epstein abused kids together. Also, it's total bullshit

Here's a fully-annotated point-by-point refutation of Gabbard's nonsense, evidence-free accusations:

🧵
For this thread we'll be comparing Gabbard's 7 basic accusations as written in her press release and parroted on Fox and now a White House press conference: dni.gov/index.php/news…

With the 118-page report she claims proves the accusations: dni.gov/files/ODNI/doc…

2/
Gabbard uses precise, actionable language. She's using the same words and phrases over and over both in the press release and all her media appearances

You can read about those phrases and also find an article version of this thread here:

I can at least partially explain why voters believed Trump: a liar who does nothing but lie

(Please keep in mind that "this is what happened" and "I think it's awesome that this happened" are two very different things. All of this is very bad! I'm not a fan!)

🧵 Pam Keith @pamkeithdc.bsky.social Follow I see many clips of people who regret voting for TACO because they have been hurt. That's what it takes for the empathy-free to learn anything. But I am always mystified by never asking the follow up question: WHY DID YOU BELIEVE HIM? No one asks that question. To me it seems so fundamental July 6, 2025 at 7:47 AM Everybody can reply 603 reposts 62 quotes 2.8K likes
1) Low-info voters remember that life was better between 2016-2019 than it was from 2020 onward, and Trump made that a big part of his campaign. He promised a return to 2019

("But Trump was President in 2020!" Yep, and the GOP did a great job connecting Biden to COVID anyway)
2) Trump jokes around a lot. It doesn't sound like joking to people left of center but it's how the right hears it

My favorite example: he once said he could beat Riley Gaines in swimming. Everyone in the audience was laughing, but the mics didn't catch it. They never do

A thread of conservative reactions to Trump's decision to start a war

Candace Owens: Furious, catty Candace Owens @RealCandaceO · 3h “A full payload of bombs was dropped” followed by “now is the time for peace”. Utterly deranged. If we had raised the 100 million Adelson gave him on Go Fund Me, maybe he would have kept his promises. Guess we’ll never know.
Charlie Kirk: memory-holing his concerns and doing the pragmatic thing, per usual @charliekirk11 Iran gave President Trump no choice. For a decade he has been adamant that Iran will never get a nuclear weapon. Iran decided to forego diplo

It's .........very cosplay so far here at Trump's birthday parade. Those wigs must be so damn hot

Let's do this!

🧵
Really this is the Army's parade of course, and they seem to be doing a thing where they're dressed in uniforms of yore

Pleased to report they have chosen to wear the union blue and eschewed the rebel grey
Here's the crowd I'm in. To the East it's more crowded, but it's not exactly wall to wall there either

You'll notice this isn't a super ultra gothic dark MAGA crowd. Hasn't been all day A long line of people waiting by a barricade to watch the street. 2-3 people deep

Good morning, I am at the ghost town that is the Army Birthday Celebration, excited to experience what promises to be an incredibly stupid day

The Army Strength Competition is about to begin

Let's do this

🧵 A banner over a wide dirt road that says "Army Birthday Festival
A sign on a lamp post that says "In DC, we rise up against fascism. Deploying the military domestically is a sign democracy is failing
The Washington Mall: An empty field with the Washington Monument in the distance. Two large helicopters, many tents, and a stage can be seen far away. There's almost no one here
Schedule for today:

9:00 AM (running late): strength competition

12:30 PM: fair with booths from sponsors like Palentir and Coinbase
6:30 PM: Big Beautiful Parade
Afterwards: concert

(Sponsor info courtesy of @noturtlesoup17.bsky.social)

motherjones.com/politics/2025/…
@noturtlesoup17 More competitors than onlookers as the teams from various departments and units are preparing to engage on Feats of Strength. Halfhearted cheers from this crowd of...maybe 100 at this point

Hello from downtown LA, where the sun is setting and the tenor of the protests is shifting

It's been a long day and has all the markings of a long night

Let's do this

🧵
I've been live tweeting this protest for the last 4 hours over on the Other Site, check it out of you'd like to:

bsky.app/profile/lauraj…
For the last four hours, and probably for a long time before that, this protest squared off with lines of rioting cops. They were remarkably refrained, mostly absorbing the constant flash bang and "less lethal" rounds without retaliation
