I'm going to be a bit vulnerable in this thread, which is for the people who care & have been failed by public health. I care deeply about people, and it saddens me to see masks with an apparent poor fit, especially when I know the person is trying their best to stay safe 1/12
It almost physically hurts me to see it, and I either have to look away or try to help. When I try to help, I’m just trying to share information & sometimes I get misinterpreted as trying to police people 😭 This is not my intent at all, people don’t know what they don’t know 2/
Let me be clear; the problem is public health, which has not communicated accurate information about airborne virus spread and proper fit testing of PPE - which they KNOW about, but refuse to share resources in a clear & accessible way for the public. 3/
This means that people are wearing ill fitting masks and thinking they're protected just because their mask says N95/KN95 on it. Wonderful people, just doing their best to protect themselves and their community. The burden of one way precautions in an unsafe world is not fair 4/
Any mask is better than no mask, for sure. But a big leaky gap at the nose or chin means the mask is not going to be as protective as it could be, and can be improved with simple free or low cost tips, using basic principles that public health is failing at communicating 5/
It is even more heartbreaking when someone who looks to be wearing a poor fitting mask gets infected, when a simple mask fix might have protected them. This is not victim blaming; I really am just trying to help them be safe, and I hope I can help make you safe too 6/
I fit test people with my PortaCount, and I wish that was more widely available! Here are my four top tips for improving mask fit even if you can’t access testing:
7/
1. Shape the nose wire *before* you put it on. This is most critical on bifold masks because pointy nose wire of a bifold doesn't fit most noses, but will help other mask types too
2. Shave! Or use the Singh Thattha technique, or partial shaving where the mask touches your face, is very rare for a heavily bearded individual to pass a fit test in any mask, trimming the seal contact area is better than long hair
Please note I have not yet conducted a fit test with these, but on a well fitted elastomeric respirator I don’t expect much change with these thin headphone covers, they fit both 3M and Honeywell pancake filters well
Assorted colors here amzn.to/3FTlixs
Colors for your pancake and cartridge filters
Fits the Honeywell P100+OV cartridge filters acceptably also
In 2025 lets normalize shaping nose wires well before donning a mask, I’m positive this will improve protection, getting the best performance out of your PPE is important because we know prevention is key
Do the final adjustments after putting it on, but this is important first
Here’s my results for the Kid95, bifold headstrap mask with a chin staple, 9.2 N99 mode Fit Factor with a pointy nose wire and 122 N99 mode Fit Factor with a properly shaped nose wire
And here’s my results with a bifold KN95 ear loop, even with the nose wire shaped well, I still failed, but the mask is much more protective, N99 mode Fit Factor 1.1 for the pointy nose wire and N99 mode Fit Factor 6.6 with the nose wire shaped, just 2 minutes quick test to show
Graph by @MariaMGillespie of vaccine antibody levels after a single booster, Day 0 plot was taken from the table of baseline characteristics of the study participants, whereas the other three data points are taken from the study results summary itself journalofinfection.com/article/S0163-…
This study adds to previous research on the difference in the immune response to different vaccine types
DIY pandemic, surgery in the lowest COVID risk possible way, with a $100 PAPR
The OR was mostly surgical masks, not N95s, but my PAPR never came off which’s only an option if it’s a surgery that can be performed without intubation, I had to fight for that ebay.com/itm/2045750617…
The Honeywell PAPR shown in the previous tweet is now discontinued, but the AirBoss PAPR new in box is still available at the link for $100, just don’t buy it if you live above 4,000ft and you definitely can’t use it on a plane
Ok, help me out here, what are the ways to describe a person who says they will do something, but then doesn’t and upon follow up now refuses to do what that said? Multiple people have tried to intervene with no success so all that’s left is twitter public opinion court
Al all volunteer community project requires trust and communication to function, notwithstanding the muddled privacy policy with @FitTestMyPlanet ‘s project, he said he would delete my data almost 4 weeks ago, as he has done for others who left his project, but now he will not
@FitTestMyPlanet I was previously one of the top 10 contributors to FTtP’s project, because I think public information sharing is important in this DIY pandemic, but I strongly object to my data being used in misleading ways to disparage good masks like Q100, BreatheTeq, Zimi, etc
Here’s my thread of top tips to get the best protection from your mask
First, if you have facial hair, shave every day, the part of your face where the mask seal sits needs to be clean shaven
If you aren’t willing or able to do that see the end of this thread for otherideas
For masks with nose wires, form the wire to the shape of your nose bridge, no sharp creases
Fix chin gaps due to mask shape or smaller face size by adding a chin pleat, using your fingers to pinch the mask together test if a straight or angled pleat will make the mask match your face shape better
