DIY pandemic, surgery in the lowest COVID risk possible way, with a $100 PAPR

The OR was mostly surgical masks, not N95s, but my PAPR never came off which’s only an option if it’s a surgery that can be performed without intubation, I had to fight for that

The discontinued Honeywell PAPR I have The Honeywell PAPR shown in the previous tweet is now discontinued, but the AirBoss PAPR new in box is still available at the link for $100, just don’t buy it if you live above 4,000ft and you definitely can’t use it on a plane

Here’s my thread of top tips to get the best protection from your mask

First, if you have facial hair, shave every day, the part of your face where the mask seal sits needs to be clean shaven

If you aren’t willing or able to do that see the end of this thread for otherideas For masks with nose wires, form the wire to the shape of your nose bridge, no sharp creases A bifold mask with a sharp crease in the nose wire

Update to my Dental PAPR build, I’ve tried every brand of filter on here and Moldex P100 filters with a Zimi 95S as a prefilter is giving the best fit factors

FF 161 Dental PAPR
FF 110
Also the Moldex filters are pleated and don’t collapse under the airflow so the spiral thing isn’t needed

People with narrow faces and a hard time fitting masks, try bringing the chin together at an angle for stapling and then if that causes the nose portion to pull away from your face try attaching the top strap closer to the nose wire, I like to use staples reinforced with hot glue
3 masks with angled chin pleats
3 N95s with the top headstrap attached near the end of the nose wires
Now that I know the two modifications I need to make it’s easy to apply this to multiple models, I still fail some of them but the fit factor always improves when I do this Dräger 1920 Small and Laianzhi FFP2

Here’s pictures for my Dental PAPR build

Parts laid out to get started with the air blower the snorkel mask scissors exhale valve P100 filter drywall anchors metal spiral tape and weatherstripping
Drywall anchors inserted into the P100 filter to keep it from collapsing when the air blower turns on
Metal spiral inserted in the center of the P100 to hold the middle open and keep the drywall anchors in place
Picture of the XL valve installed at the bottom of the snorkel mask and the P100 hot glued to the backside of the air blower and weatherstripping applied to the front end of the air blower
Here’s photos of the assembled dental PAPR and a photo of it in use at the dentist
All assembled with tape to hold it together, A perfect seal is not needed because it has a very high pressure so any leaks will just push clean air out

Small face elastomeric respirators.
I have a full face respirator that fits great. I’ve been using an MCU-2/P for 15+ yrs. Since COVID started I’ve been trying to find a half face option. ACI Duckbill N95s are the only disposable N95 I’ve tried that fits.
Now respirators 🧵 Image 3M 6100 was the first one I tried. I could not pass a user seal check for negative or positive pressure despite many attempts. Very painful due to narrow nose bridge at the top. Image
