A couple of weeks ago, I had a tricky meeting with a family in preparation for a funeral.
I knew in advance that one of the family is fiercely against mitigations like masks, so I was braced for trouble.
When I got to the meeting, he wasn't there, so he missed my prepared speech.
But he arrived later.
He stared intently at me the entire time. I picked up a fair degree of aggression from him, despite the fact that I was there to help bury a family member.
He couldn't resist saying something though, so as we were closing up, he asked if I would be masking for the funeral.
When I said that I would, he said that he didn't think that would be respectful to his mam.
Now this guy is very overtly religious. And he believes stuff like prayer keeps you well, and that you only get sick if you lack faith.
So I pulled out what I feel is my strongest emotional defence in the face of that kind of reasoning.
I said that I felt God had called me to make the sacrifice of wearing a mask to protect a vulnerable family member struggling with a serious health issue.
I said that it was hard to do, but that God had told me to do it, so that's what I was doing.
I said it with real sincerity because, hey, it's actually one way of expressing what I believe.
It struck home with him on a deep emotional level, and I felt all the aggression drop in an instant.
We chatted for a while about how I made it work.

He asked me if it had worked at keeping me well.
He was impressed to hear that I hadn't been sick since 2020.
We left on good terms.
He gave me a really big handshake at the funeral, and a word of approval.
Sometimes battles aren't what we think they are.

Covid infections make every single part of your body vulnerable to new problems.

Whatever age you are.

But let's pick *one* part of your body, the skin.
You'd be surprised how much harm Covid is doing.
I'm just going to throw a few charts up here of 'hospital episodes' for individual skin conditions that show the last 12 years of data.
(Hospital episodes are not *cases*, they are the number of times someone interacts with a hospital for treatment)
Here's a few different conditions across a few ages.
From top left: Herpes in 18-45s
Viral warts 18-65s
Dermatophytosis 18-45s
Bacterial infections of skin Under 10s
Other mycobacterial infections of skin 18-65s
Mycetoma Under 18s. Image

The ten stages of Covid era grief:
Denial - pretending to yourself that we're still living in 2019, that endless repeat covid infections don't make you more sick, and that washing your hands makes you well
Bargaining - inviting the virus to infect you now, hoping it will be kind to you when you're older

An actual professor said this.

Allow me a moment to tear it into shreds.

It's hard to know exactly where to start because there are just *so many things wrong with it*, even in just that one tiny sentence... but let's go for it...
Let's just start with this overall weird premise that getting repeat infections with covid now will keep you from getting severely ill when you are older...

WHAT IF YOU ARE OLDER ALREADY.

A lot of people have been really hard on the ukhsa, but I don't think it's always fair.
They're still a relatively new agency, so I think it's worth taking a moment to highlight some of the considerable achievements of their brief history.
❤️🙌
1
Encouraged everyone to repeatedly and endlessly catch Covid, a virus that has killed upwards of 30 million people and caused lasting ill health for 400 million so far.
2
Pushed handwashing as the solution for the aforementioned airborne virus, proving that they want you to catch it.

Whatever you blame it on (and I mostly blame covid infections), can we agree something is going badly wrong?

Hospital episodes of treatment for assorted pathogenic infections, England, all ages, by year.

Not only is Veldhoen wrong about the lack of damage to the immune system, he's also ignorant of the actual damage it's causing. Image
From his ivory laboratory tower, he provides no explanation for what is going on in the real world.
