For 50 years, John Ott proved artificial light was rewriting our biology.

He controlled animal sex, doubled tumor onset times, and stopped 14 terminal cancer patients from progressing.

His work hit every major journal, then vanished.

John Ott was filming apples for Disney when they refused to ripen under glass.

Only under UV-transmitting plastic would they turn red.

Morning glories wouldn't open under camera lights until he added blue filters to remove red wavelengths.
Then came the pumpkins.

Under standard fluorescent: all female flowers, pistils. Under daylight fluorescent: all male flowers, stamens.

He could control the sex of plants by changing the light spectrum alone.

He called it Mal-Illumination, light starvation, like malnutrition.
A pet breeder wrote him asking for help: 9 males were born for every 1 female.

Ott sent two daylight incandescent bulbs.

Next litter? 3 females.

Mink behind pink glass became vicious and aggressive with 90% of males unable to reproduce.

The same mink behind blue plastic became docile enough to be handled bare-handed with 100% breeding success.

Light wavelength was literally rewriting their hormones and behavior.
The cancer experiments were the most striking.

Mice under pink fluorescent light developed tumors in 7.5 months.

Mice under full-spectrum light took 16.1 months, more than double.

Over 2,000 mice tested. The only difference was the light they lived under. Image
Then the human trial.

1959, Bellevue Medical Center: 15 terminal cancer patients.

Instructions: No artificial light & maximum outdoor time w/ no sunglasses.

14 of 15 showed no tumor progression over the summer.

The experiment was never repeated. Dismissed as "unscientific." Image
Meanwhile, Ott discovered something terrifying by accident.

Rats placed near his TV set became hyperactive, then lethargic, then dead in 10-12 days.

Rats protected from the TV behind lead shielding: normal.
But, school studies are more disturbing.

1967 Illinois: 5X the national leukemia rate, all cases in 2 classrooms.

Rooms had curtains closed with warm white fluorescents running constantly for years.

New teachers opened curtains & changed bulbs. Zero cases for years after.
1973 Florida: 4 first-grade classrooms in a windowless school.

2 got full-spectrum lights w/ lead-shielded cathodes. Within a week, hyperactive children calmed down w/o drugs.

1 boy with an extreme learning disability learned to read in 90 days. The light had changed his brain.
How is this possible?

Light enters your eyes, hits specialized retinal cells, and signals the pineal and pituitary glands.

These master glands control hormones, immunity, mood, and cancer resistance.

We evolved under full-spectrum sunlight for 10,000+ generations. We've had artificial light for 5 generations.

LED bulbs, glasses, windows, TV & phone screens, all omit critical wavelengths.

We're running the human machine on the wrong fuel.
Ott published in the NY Academy of Sciences, AMA journals, and Oxford's Photobiology Congress.

He received an honorary doctorate and awards from the National Eye Research Foundation.

Reasons for rejection:

• "No evidence in literature"
• "Not familiar with scientific methods"
• "Budget constraints"

His collaborators included chairmen of hospital tumor research committees.

Their signatures meant nothing to review boards.
In 1950, the US had the 5th lowest infant mortality. In 1968, 13th.

The hyperactivity epidemic began exactly when fluorescent lighting became standard in schools.

Disease, crime rates, and learning disabilities are all rising with our artificial light environment.
Ott died in 2000.

His message was that light is a nutrient and we're on the wrong diet. And he was right.

The light we live under is changing your biology, your hormones, your behavior, and your disease resistance.
