A Ukrainian primer explains how Russia gathers information from cell phone use in the grey zone and its consequences.

“Why you need to be careful when using a phone at the front line. Let's consider the issue using the example of the ELINT system (Electronic Intelligence).
1/ Image
“ELINT usually works only on group targets. Three or more phones in one place in the forest and the artillery gets the target designation. The radio intelligence complex shows the SIM card number, the phone's serial number, and the signal strength from the phone.
2/
“The front line is not just a couple of kilometers of the frontline. Do not keep phones turned on where artillery can reach. If you urgently need to call, use only one phone at a time within a 700-meter area.
3/
“How do ELINT systems installed on UAVs determine the location of mobile phones?

A false base station operates on board the UAV. Flying over you, it overrides the signal from your mobile operator's tower, and your phone registers on the UAV's false network.
4/
“This is a weakness in the GSM 900, GSM1800 security protocol. [Global System for Mobile communication]

•What happens to the phone?
Nothing, you just see the network, but calls cannot be made. The UAV will fly away, and your original network will return.
5/ Image
“Therefore, in 99% of cases, you will not know that you have been "painted".

• Can you protect yourself somehow?
Basically, NO. You can only secure yourself by turning off the phone or switching it to airplane mode.
6/
“• What can they learn about you?
1. They see the SIM card number (IMSI). [International Mobile Subscriber Identity] This is not the phone number, so don't worry.
2. They see your phone's serial number IMEI. [International Mobile Equipment Identity]
7/ Image
Image
“3. They record the location with an accuracy of 500-1000 meters.
4. They can send SMS messages even from any number (not only when flying by). That is, there is no analysis of the phone's content, calls, or messages…
8/
“…(to determine if you are military or not) and there cannot be.

• Why is this dangerous?
In 10-15 hours of flight time, it can scan a front line area 100 km long and 20 km deep. Up to 60 points can be specified for an autonomous route.
9/
“Returning, it brings data to operators, which is downloaded to a computer and merged into a common database.

Then they can see (overlaid on a map) the location of mobile subscribers. And the common database allows them to judge troop movements along the fronts.
10/
“• So, what should be done?
1. Take a temporary SIM card to the front and change it if possible.
2. Remember that the front is not only the "zero" line. ELINT also works in the depths.
3. Do not trust any SMS even from familiar numbers. Specifically SMS, not messengers!
11/
“4. If there are signs of a false base station operating, take it into account. Your positions are being monitored.
5. Keep in mind that you can receive SMS not only when a UAV flies overhead; …
12/
“…mobile communication protocols also allow this from abroad through the "native" network via SS7 signaling. A common mistake is to think there is no mobile communication here and it never will be, so there is no point in turning off the phone.”

Russian blogger “Military Manager” reveals the tremendous importance of the huge Ukrainian “Baba Yaga” heavy drone fleet, while the Russian's hardly have any.

“The heavy drones of the Ukrainians started causing problems literally from the moment they appeared on the front.
1/
“Today, they have become literally ubiquitous and perform a huge amount of incredibly important and complex work for the enemy. Heavy drones have become the backbone of the enemy's FPV drone operations; without their work as relays, the effectiveness of enemy strike drones…
2/
“…of enemy strike drones would be significantly lower. The enemy regularly conducts sorties with these drones as aerial motherships for strikes on our rear areas. They also supply the enemy's cut-off soldiers.

Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov has witnessed the vast scale of the comprehensive operations of the Ukrainian SBU to track and document every Russian crime and atrocity.

“No one will go unpunished.
1/ Image
“In our country, there are many structures and agencies that perform important work, but few people talk about it.

Did you know that all crimes committed by Russians against the Ukrainian people are documented and recorded?
2/ Image
“And this is done very thoroughly because every war crime has a name.

This is handled by the Main Investigative Department of the SBU.
Where do I intersect with them? Of course, in the field of trophies. Missiles, Shaheds, other UAVs.

The progression in capabilities of the Russian UMPK guided glide bomb series for FAB-500 aerial bombs

The original UMPK for the FAB-500 M62 aerial bomb was guided by a 4-element “Cometa M4” CRPA jam-resistant satellite navigation system, with up to 75 km in range.
1/ Image
The first major upgrade is the extended-range UMPK-PD, with increasingly difficult to jam 8 and then 12 element “Cometa M8–12” satellite navigation.
Extended wings and a new FAB-500T bomb with better aerodynamic qualities increases the range to 100 km.
2/ Image
The recent version UMPK-PDM has the “Cometa-M12+” system for navigation.
It has a changed module shape, the FAB-500T bomb, and much longer wings for up to 150 km in range.
Most critically, a turbojet apparently can be installed to extend the range up to 200 km.

A Russian soldier describes in detail the deadly conditions on the frontline.

“Small groups are fighting a huge war. An ‘Opornik’ [dugout] can be held by a handful: two, three, or four people. The line of combat contact has completely changed.
1/ Image
“In 2023, our task was to bring a company into the village on ten BPM-3s. That was already difficult back then.

Now the equipment is stationed tens of kilometers away from the LBS.
2/
“If in 2023 those very BMP-3s doubled as little tanks, now they are unlikely to reach a position from which they can fire.

VictoryDrones's Maria Berlinska argues that victory for Ukraine will come by winning the race to an army of fully autonomous drones, and not with Tomahawks.

“I do not claim to have the ultimate truth; this is purely my broad vision of the next stages of the technological war.
1/ Image
“A conditional division.
Just to understand the overall picture and trends.

The first stage - drones are controlled by humans directly on the battlefield. Mainly for artillery fire correction and reconnaissance. The first attempts at strike operations - drops, kamikaze.
2/
“Radio communication, fiber optics, precise attempts at guidance.

The second - drones are controlled by humans. The distance to the battlefield is constantly increasing but still within tens of kilometers. Radio communication, fiber optics, LTE, Starlinks, mesh networks, etc.

A Russian manual entitled “Countering ‘Baba Yaga’ Type Drones” starts with vivid descriptions of the capabilities of three types of Ukrainian bombers.
Described first in some selected excerpts from the manual is the Nemesis drone, a heavy quadcopter guided by Starlink.
1/ Image
“If it goes to bomb some armored vehicles or bunkers, it takes PTABs [submunitions] or small cumulatives [shaped-cgarge]. If it goes to work specifically on air defense posts, it mainly takes 60 mm anti-personnel mines.
2/
“If it goes to work on evacuation or some open shelters, i.e., on unprotected personnel, then bombs with chopped rod .
For example, a Yaga worked on combat equipment; the next raid there will be in 10-15 minutes, already with chopped rod.
