Ooookay, one more laptop today. A few folks have asked "how about the red laptop? Does it have a chance?" Well, I think I'd say "kindof, with some help!" Let's explore in a 🧵 here! Image
Image
Image
Initially, I started out with some Goof Off to clean off the paint. That damaged the screen cover's plastic. But I soon learned that would not matter. Because, well, here's the screen. Also, look at that nice red HDD cover. Paint on the keyboard too. Oh boy! Image
After some effort, I got the battery out. It was sealed by the paint. Now we can take a look inside. Lovely! Image
Image

Well, sometime later, and with SOME VERY ADDITIONAL CAREFUL application of Goof Off, and some scraping, and many paint chips, here is the end result! I stole a screen from the system that wouldn't POST! Image
Image
Image
But what about the red paint on the battery? I left it... as a battle scar! I might clean it off later, but for now, I want it to wear that scar proudly. So yea, the red laptop lives on... somewhat! Thx for following along.

Shall we continue our LTE 5000 series cleaning and testing? I'm glad I covered them with a tarp, we had some condensation overnight!! This one is a LTE 5380 without any drives. It cleaned up nice and it does power up!! Image

Okay, second one is a little rough. Cleaned up. Powered on once but won't power on again. Image

I've cleaned and tested three of my $10 laptops so far. And they are flawless!! Image

The fourth one I cleaned is a little rough (bad screen bezel, failing HDD, battery was taped in, and mouse pointer is bad) but hey it at least powers on! Image
Some of these are super gross... Image

Time for the System Source Swap Meet pics I took... in no particular order. Let's goooo! 🧵 time.

First we have an Amiga with some Macs, etc. Also, tons of interface cards. Some cool Apple stuff. And some IBM PCs! Image

More PCs, macs, laptops, and some software! The boxed copy of StuffIt Deluxe caught my eye! Image

One seller impressively had the original boxes for most of his stuff! Image

It's always fun to install "older" OSes on systems not designed for them. Given that, how about we install Windows '98 SE on this Dell Latitude D600 with a Pentium M processor? Let's have a look at it in a 🧵 here! Image
So, first and foremost, this site is AWESOME! There is a bundle of drivers that you can download, and inside the bundle is a readme file with some very clear instructions on what to do! retrosystemsrevival.blogspot.com/2018/05/dell-l…Image
I kicked off the install, and not far into the process, we ran into an issue since this system has more than 512MB of memory. I had to add a line to system dot ini under the [386enh] section as you see here (MaxPhysPage=20000). After that change, install proceeded! Image

Okay, time to explore the Compaq Presario 2200 that I brought back from Dallas! Like all of these, this one is a bit of a mixed bag. Let's have a look in a 🧵 here! Image
So, first, like 100% of these I have seen, the plastics in the front are very brittle. This front panel has previously been glued on, you can see some glue residue here and there! Image
Image
Image
Image
Here's the back of the PC. Nope, these systems do not have PCI expansion, and have one "weird" 8 bit ISA expansion slot for a modem! Image

Let's test a few things that I picked up at the DFW swap meet this weekend! We'll use the trusty Dell Precision 220 Workstation as the test rig, along with Windows 2000. Time for a 🧵 Image
Image
So, first we'll test the Diamond AGP card. It's an OEM card, and after some searching, I THINK it is a Diamond Speedstar A200, with the S3 Savage4 PRO chipset. In it goes! And I lied, I used Windows XP to test this one, I forgot 😂. Anyway, it checks out ✅ Image

Next, we have this card here, I think it's an Nvidia card. Foolishly, I thought it was PCI, but it's PCI Express. I have no use for this! It'll go on the free table at the next event I attend, whatever that is! Image
