🧵The Israeli Knesset’s approval of a bill to impose the death penalty on Palestinian detainees and prisoners constitutes a dangerous escalation that further entrenches Israel’s apartheid system⤵️
The Knesset’s National Security Committee approved the bill on 3 November ahead of the first reading on 10 November. It now proceeds to second and third readings before becoming law. The bill was introduced by the Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) party, led by Itamar Ben Gvir
The bill stipulates that “any person who intentionally or recklessly causes the death of an Israeli citizen or a person residing in Israel, when motivated by racism, hatred, or intent to harm Israel or the Israeli people, shall be subject to the death penalty.”
The enactment of this bill represents a dangerous escalation in Israeli policy towards Palestinians and confirms the systematic discrimination and violence imposed upon them, which has culminated in the ongoing genocide in the #Gaza Strip for more than two years
Imposing the death penalty against Palestinians constitutes a clear violation of international humanitarian law and of Israel’s obligations as an occupying power. Palestinians are protected persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention
The most dangerous aspect of the bill lies in its application within a judicial system that lacks guarantees of a fair trial for Palestinians. Confessions are extracted under duress, effective legal representation is unavailable, and the presumption of innocence is disregarded
Imposing the death penalty in a discriminatory manner against Palestinians based on national or religious identity contradicts the principle of equality before the law and constitutes a clear violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
The current debate surrounding the bill creates a misleading impression that Israel had previously abolished the death penalty and is now seeking to “reinstate” it. In reality, Israel has continuously carried out extrajudicial killings and summary executions of Palestinians
The international community, particularly the states parties to the Geneva Conventions and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, must take immediate, effective measures to pressure Israel to withdraw and halt the death penalty bill

🧵In an Israeli cabinet discussion on enforcing the “Yellow Line” in #Gaza, senior officials debated whether to shoot a child or a donkey first.
The rhetoric, though appalling, reflects a broader pattern in Israeli official language that dehumanises Palestinians, fuels violence, and gives the Israeli military a green light to kill, a reality seen in the deaths of around 67,000 Palestinians in Gaza, over 90% of them civilians.
🧵The Israeli army’s escalation in targeting displaced people in Al-Mawasi, southwest of the #Gaza Strip, is turning the Israeli-claimed “humanitarian zone” into a death trap
The Israeli army is targeting the tents with sniper fire, random shooting from drones and nearby military vehicles, as well as airstrikes and artillery shelling, while at the same time claiming the area is a humanitarian zone and ordering over one million residents of Gaza City to evacuate there
Euro-Med Monitor’s field team has documented repeated attacks on displacement tents in the area in recent days, killing several civilians, injuring many others, and destroying their tents along with the few personal belongings they still had
🧵At every dawn in #Gaza City, families wake to deafening, earth-shaking blasts, relentless explosions unlike any weapon heard before. Israel’s army is using explosive-laden robots, a new weapon designed to wipe out entire neighbourhoods in an instant
🧵The Israeli army’s killing of five Palestinian farmers while working on their land in Khan Younis, southern #Gaza, reflects a recurring pattern and an ongoing systematic policy aimed at destroying any attempt to secure the minimum food supply through local production
The five victims, all from the same family, were identified as: Suleiman and Mohammed Jamal Darwish al-Astal, Mousa Abdullah al-Astal, Mahmoud Naif Mustafa al-Astal, and Mohammed Marwan Ahmad al-Astal
Israel’s escalating attacks on food sources in Gaza come just as the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) formally declared famine in Gaza Governorate for the first time ever
🧵Over the past 22 months, Israel has killed around one Palestinian athlete per day and destroyed nearly every sports facility in #Gaza. Yet @FIFAcom and @UEFA, have refused to suspend Israel or take action, a response they had no hesitation applying to other countries
🧵Israel has destroyed nearly all animal wealth in the #Gaza Strip, approximately 97 per cent, through bombing and systematic starvation, including working animals that served as the last means of transport amid fuel shortages and limited public mobility
Through the deliberate imposition of unsustainable living conditions leading to physical destruction, Israeli policies reflect a systematic and ongoing pattern of genocide. This is carried out through the destruction of food sources, livestock, and agricultural production, alongside widespread killings, an illegal blockade on the Gaza Strip, and the deliberate restriction of food supplies for nearly two years.
Before Israel’s genocide in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, the enclave had around 6,500 poultry farms that supplied about three million chickens to the local market each month. Now, 666 days later, over 93 per cent of these farms have been completely destroyed, and the few remaining have ceased operations entirely.
