There is a lot of confusion on what constitutes "the Epstein files." So let me explain. (Thread). First, there are the DOJ/FBI federal criminal case files. This is what Congress voted to release this past week. 1.
2. A small subset included with the DOJ files are the federal grand jury files. This is the evidence federal prosecutors present to a grand jury in order to get an indictment. It is a very small percentage of the files. (more)
3. The Oversight Committee Epstein files: these are they files that Congress obtain from Epstein's estate by issuing a subpoena. They include Epstein's calendars, emails and other documents that have been dripping out over they past few months. (more)
4. Epstein Civil Case files: Dozens of civil lawsuits were filed against Epstein, Maxwell, Epstein's estate, Epstein's banks and the FBI, mostly by victims. As these cases are litigated, a lot of discovery was produced implicating various people and institutions in Epstein's crimes....(more)
5. (Civil cases continued) Two of the civil cases, one filed against Maxwell by victim Virginia Giuffre, and the other filed against the FBI, produced an extraordinary amount of evidence we have already seen: plane logs, message pads, emails, etc. The Miami Herald (Brown v. Maxwell) has been responsible for the bulk of the unsealing in the Maxwell/Giuffre case, which is still ongoing. Several names in this case remain sealed, and we don't know why. (They are not victims' names, but John and Jane Doe names.) moreImage
6. (civil cases con't) Despite the release and unsealing of portions of these civil case files, many of the documents remain sealed or redacted. Media organizations, such as the Miami Herald, New York Times, WSJ and some TV networks, have filed requests to unseal more documents. This is a painstaking process and it is SLOW. These are the documents that require a judge's ruling or a panel of judges to rule upon. (more)
7. Treasury Dept/IRS Epstein files: Sen. Ron Wyden has been in the forefront of seeking access to Epstein's financial records. However, he has not received support from Republicans on this front. These files are important because they show how Epstein made his money.
8. CIA files (if they exist): There has long been speculation that Epstein worked in intelligence. Release of these files, if they exist, would show to what extent he was involved in intelligence which would perhaps also explain why he managed to get away with his crimes for so long. (more)
9. Federal Aviation Administration records: Epstein had two jets and flew around the world. He was, after 2008, a convicted sex offender. Did anyone ever check to see whether he was bringing in women and girls from other countries. Not all his plane logs have been made public, and while the FAA does not hold Epstein's plane logs they do have records on where he flew. Homeland Security should also have records on his passengers when he arrived from overseas. (Last I asked for them, they were fully redacted.)
10. Last but not least: Remember that not all the claims against Epstein and his associates were filed in court. Many of them were also settled through quiet agreements that may never be known. I know of several. This is the best list I can think summarizing the history of "the Epstein files" at the moment. I hope it helps clear up some misconceptions. If I forgot anything I will file it as an added tweet. End//// @threadreaderapp

The @miamiherald & @wlrn worked on this Brightline "Killer Train" series for months, producing a comprehensive investigation and a podcast in July that led to results. It is mindblowing that @InsideEdition & @CBSMedia is now sending US a press release to promote a story they essentially ripped off from the Herald. Never in a million years when I wrote my "Perversion of Justice" series seven years ago @miamiherald seven years ago did I think this would happen. (thread)

2. I've been asked a lot about why I took up this old case which had been written about at length by other journalists over the years. Even with the little bit I knew about the case in 2016, I couldn't understand why and how Epstein got away with such horrible crimes.
3. Federal immunity btw is a benefit that is normally granted in exchange for something else of value to prosecutors. What if anything did federal authorities get for giving Epstein and his co-conspirators -- both named and unnamed? This was one of many questions I had. more

Key words in Patel’s comments today:
1. “Credible” — you can’t get “credible” evidence or testimony if you don’t listen, you don’t investigate and you don’t dig. What’s more, for far too long DOJ ignored Epstein’s victims and treated them terribly. Any seasoned investigator will tell you —you don’t make a case that way. You build a case with other evidence, phone records, emails, witnesses, bank records, why didn’t they flip his employees? etc etc etc (More)
axios.com/2025/09/16/kas…
2. “Our information is limited” — what does this even mean? Isn’t it the FBI and DOJ’s JOB to follow the case until they get to the truth? Did they even look? Most victims say they have NEVER been contacted by the FBI. WHY?
3. “Limited search warrant” issued in 2006 — this is a red herring. The problem was not the search warrant. The problem was Epstein was tipped off before the police got there to serve it and he was able to remove his computers. Either way this didn’t pose a problem in 2019 when Epstein was arrested — and neither did it stop a grand jury from indicting him. It’s an excuse that doesn’t even make sense.

From the beginning, both sides of the political spectrum wanted to point the blame for the Epstein coverup on each other. The truth is the bad guys (and women) were on all sides of politics. So there is no "appeasing" the far right -- or the far left. Everyone -- left and right -- has dirty hands. (thread)
The FBI never thoroughly investigated Epstein in the way he should have been from the get go in 2007, and even years later, when victims continued to come forward and there was clear evidence presented to the US Attorney's Office in NY -- under Preet in 2011-2016 -- nothing was done. It wasn't until public outcry in 2018 that Geoffrey Berman (then US Attorney in SDNY) that Epstein was arrested and new charges brought. (2)
Even then, at Maxwell's criminal trial, it was again clear that mistakes were made in evidence gathering. They left a safe and when they returned with a search warrant, it was gone: miamiherald.com/news/local/cri…

Breaking News: The homicide arrest of a prominent Miami real estate broker in the boat crash death of a 17-year-old girl comes after a witness surfaced in response to a series of articles about the case in @miamiherald.
"That witness spoke out after the Miami Herald published a series of articles detailing how boaters who were immediately on the scene after the crash were never contacted by state investigators."
The reason the story stayed alive is because reporters at the Miami Herald never let go of it. #localnews
