1/ Ukraine's audacious attack today on a Russian submarine at anchor in Novorossiysk has prompted anger and derision from Russian warbloggers. One complains: "I don't have the strength to comment on this anal fucking anymore." ⬇️

2/ Anatoly Shariy comments that the attack on the submarine Varshavyanka is "totally mindblowing." "Is Novorossiysk missing a submarine?" he asks sarcastically.

'Military Informant' comments gloomily that the damage is likely to be severe:

3/ "It appears the unmanned surface vehicle (USV) [sic, actually an unmanned underwater vehicle, UUV] struck near the Varshavyanka's stern, where the vertical and aft horizontal rudders, as well as the propeller, are located."

4/ "If so, then even with extreme luck and no direct hit to the submarine itself, these vital and vulnerable mechanisms could have sustained serious damage, potentially putting the Kalibr submarine carrier out of action for a long time."

5/ "The Black Sea Fleet, as always, is holding its own. Even fleeing to Novorossiysk didn't help. And the camera's still filming."

6/ Rybar, which is connected with the Kremlin, is more sanguine, claiming that the damage was "minor":

"Fortunately, the submarine escaped with only minor injuries. However, this is the only piece of news that's not too bad amid the Navy's otherwise dreadful woes."

7/ 'Evil Sailor' similarly claims that the submarine escaped damage:

"The submarine was not damaged.

The impact struck a nearby pier. There are casualties (I won't disclose them).

But! There are many questions for Sergei Mikhailovich [Pinchuk, the Black Sea Fleet commander]."

8/ "And not only for him.

In general, this is an extremely alarming call."

(Pinchuk is not a popular figure in the Russian Navy; he is alleged to have called his officers "pigdogs".)

9/ 'Two Majors' suggests that a major security lapse had to have occurred for the submarine to be targeted in this way:

10/ "The only question is how it even made it to Novorossiysk. The practice of protecting Crimean bays with boom barriers and destroying enemy cruise missile systems on approach is well-established."

11/ 'ZHIVOV' wonders why "restricting mobile internet access nationwide and blocking Telegram calls didn't work as a defence. Could that be the point?

I remember driving past the port of Novorossiysk this year; there's a transit road right along the berth wall."

12/ "I kept wondering why the military section of the port wasn't fenced off with the same beautiful green 4-meter fences they use to fence off the country houses of respected people on Rublevo-Uspenskoe Highway. Everything is visible.

13/ "Otherwise, I'm sure this is all slander, provocation, and video editing. If something like this had happened, the official bodies of the Ministry of Defence would have definitely reported it. And if they didn't report it, then nothing happened."

14/ 'UAV Developer' has been complaining for some time about the Russian Navy's failure to develop effective sea drones, contrasting it with the much faster pace of development in the army.
