Propagandists driving false narratives appeal to what's called CONFIRMATION BIASES.
They carefully craft narratives they want people to believe in order to achieve a POLITICAL EFFECT.
The most common confirmation bias strategy these people use to manipulate their readers is the ANONYMOUSLY SOURCED LEAK.
Once only a major strategy of the Liberal Fake News, over the past few years many lazy people have discovered that the Trump base will EAGERLY ACCEPT anonymously sourced outrage/clickbait content from them if it CONFORMS TO THEIR BIASES.
It's easy because the mark WANTS TO BELIEVE.
On a psychological level, many of the dishonest propaganda peddlers resorting to this anonymously sourced deception excuse themselves by saying "I'm just giving them WHAT THEY WANT! They WANT to hear this!"
Some of the time the anonymous 'officials familiar with the matter' are made up. Some of these dishonest people are very lazy.
Some of the time, what they're doing is they're approaching a low level staffer/coffee fetcher and asking them leading questions to 'get back' the narrative they want to report to their audience.
This is NOT that hard to do.
Finding some idiot low level staffer who's ego you stroke and pump for office scuttlebutt rumors, only happy to become an 'anonymous source' for you. Ask them a few leading questions, get the narrative you want to print parroted back to you, voila!

they don't want to ruin THE ILLUSION.
They can't give up the source. No matter how badly the source gives their asses 3rd degree burns.
They can't do it.
