Since Vietnam, troops have almost uniformly been saying to anyone who would listen that bad politics and over-involved politicians have been holding back the United States military's ability to kill the enemy and break their stuff.
Iran was one of my chief problem sets when I worked in National Security. I was “in the know,” as it were, during Trump 45’s Maximum Pressure Campaign.
I suppose now is the time for an introduction to Iran thread.
The first thing you need to know about Iran is that they have two parallel militaries: the Artesh (regular army); and the Sepah (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps), which each have ground forces, air forces, navies, air defense, and special forces.
The second thing you need to understand is the geography at play. Iran is far bigger than Iraq, mountainous, with a north and south coast. Tehran is in the north, in the mountains.
In the south, in the Persian/Arabian Gulf, is where you’ll find the Strait of Hormuz—America’s major problem.
