🧵 Why is it so important to properly understand the nature of this war and the definition of victory?
Trump sees the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a war over territory. Russia occupies the entire Luhansk region and about 80–85% of the Donetsk region, which leads him to conclude that Ukraine has already lost the war and is only unnecessarily prolonging its inevitable end
Trump cannot (or does not want to) understand that this is not a war over territory but over Ukrainian statehood. Russia seeks to subordinate Ukraine, and so far this war has been a strategic failure for Moscow. Hence, there is no reason to believe that Russia is winning
Faulty assumptions about the nature of this war inevitably lead to faulty definitions of victory, which then end up completely misaligned with the realities of the war on the battlefield. Trump is consistent in pressing Ukraine, but Ukraine has no reason whatsoever to capitulate
No politician wants to invest their political capital in a lost cause. Trump is mistaken in believing that Ukraine is a lost cause, but that is what he believes, and so far no one has convinced him to adopt any definition of victory in Ukraine other than the "territorial" one
From the mistaken assumption that this is a territorial war follow the logic of American negotiators, whose objective is effectively to compensate both sides for a territorial compromise. The US wants to pay Ukraine off (in various forms) for ceding a piece of land to Russia
The Trump administration applies the same logic to Russia - various prospects of economic cooperation are meant to pay Russia off for agreeing to abandon its pursuit of occupying the entire Donetsk region
This approach has been doomed to fail from the very beginning, yet the US continues down this path. That is also why Trump regularly blames Zelensky rather than Putin - because, according to this flawed logic, the outcome of the war has already been decided in Russia's favor
That is why it is so important for Europe to develop its own definition of victory in Ukraine - so that European politicians do not grope in the dark like the US and understand that supporting Ukraine is an investment in a cause that very much still has prospects for success
For a definition of Ukraine's victory, I refer readers to my own @PISM_Poland report:

🧵 Let's get some basic facts straight again, or who is "going to have to get moving" and come to the negotiating table Image
In early 2014, Ukraine was a neutral country, led by a pro-Russian president, with around 70% of the population opposed to NATO membership. Yet Russia violated Ukraine's neutrality, annexed Crimea, and then launched a covert invasion in eastern Ukraine
Petro Poroshenko won 2014 presidential election after campaigning on a settlement with Russia and preserving a special status for the Russian language. He was initially sceptical about NATO membership and emphasized Ukraine had to rely primarily on its own army to ensure security

🧵 What I believe is true about Trump, Ukraine and Russia. These 10 assumptions stand together, without internal contradictions. I want to share them, given how conflicting the assessments are after the Munich Security Conference Image
1/ Trump genuinely wants to end the war and is making real efforts toward that goal. It's far less than Europe (and Ukraine) would like, but Trump is right that Russia is primarily a conventional threat to Europe, and it is Europe that should carry the main burden of response
From the Ukrainian point of view, it was Trump, not Kamala Harris, who represented upside potential. Influential people in Kyiv used to say that Trump was a rollercoaster, but Harris was a slow death - and if you were going to die anyway, then better die fast than slow

🧵Much has been written about Poland's support for Ukraine following the Russian invasion, but little about how this policy was actually shaped. @JakubKumoch, an advisor to President Duda on international affairs back then, now offers a rare insight into this period👇 Image
Entering the presidential office, Jakub was tasked with developing Poland's new policy towards its eastern neighbours in the post-pandemic era. A key aspect was fostering a personal relationship between the Polish president Andrzej Duda and Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky
Main objective was initially to reach a consensus on historical issues. It switched then to helping Ukraine resist Russian demands. Since Jan 2022, the bilateral conversations increasingly focused on the impending war and how the two countries should collaborate when it comes

🧵Quick take on the supposed "Russian feelings" about Ukraine and NATO Image
In early 2014, Ukraine was a neutral country, with a pro-Russian president, and with 70% of Ukraine's population against NATO membership. Yet Russia violated Ukraine's neutrality and annexed Crimea, then launched a covert invasion of Ukraine in the east
Petro Poroshenko won the presidential election in 2014 having promised a settlement with Russia, keeping a special status of the Russian language in Ukraine. He was initially sceptical regarding NATO accession, underlined Ukraine must rely on its own strength to provide security

🧵Ukazała się właśnie trzygodzinna rozmowa amerykańskiego podcastera Lexa Fridmana z prezydentem Ukrainy Wołodymyrem Zełenskim. Przegadana. Słaby i irytujący prowadzący, czasem tracący do niego cierpliwość Zełenski. Mimo to kilka momentów wartych uwagi 👇

Punkt 1. NIEZWŁOCZNE ZAPROSZENIE UKRAINY DO NATO.
