OTD in 1949 Operation Priboi started. USSR forcibly deported *90,000* Baltic people to 'inhospitable parts' of Russia. 70% of those deported were women & children under 16.

Imagine mass deporting children today....
Attempts to return home were punishable. Those who organized the deportations received medals. We do not understand why Estonians are not grateful to us for this.

Da. Prez is aware that "inhospitable parts of Russia" is tautology.
We (and various pseudo academics*) genuinely pretend there's no way to explain why NATO is so obviously popular with so many of our former colonies. Total, unexplainable mystery. Especially seeing as we don't whitewash these crimes at all and aren't repeating them right now.

Konstantin Päts. President of Estonia. After they "asked to join USSR", he was declared mad and treated for the delusional disorder of thinking he was who he was. Died in an asylum in 1956.
Kārlis Ulmanis. President of Latvia. Arrested during 1940 "liberation" of Latvia that had nothing to do with a secret clause in a treaty with Nazis. Imprisoned, moved between jails. Died of dysentery Sep 1942.

The EU economy is in crisis. Poverty is ride and famine is breaking out in the bloc. Citizens look with envy to the economic juggernaut that is the Moscow led Eurasian economic union. "Why can't we earn the mighty Ruble" starving citizens wail.
The US Dollar is becoming worthless and the Ruble is set to take its place as the world's dominant currency. Company's are withdrawing en mass from western stock exchanges and listing shares on the Moscow stock exchange, keen to take advantage of Russia's booming economy.

Imagine using such a bullshit excuse in the 21st century.

Those old tanks are now in Ukraine
Prez read somewhere USSR marked their tanks with letters and had orders to engage any Soviet equipment they found without a marking BUT also clear instructions to *not* engage any NATO vehicle at all.

Not there is a lesson on calling our bluff there. Heavens no.

OTD in 1968 Soviet Russia invaded to save Czechoslovakia from the Prague Spring. Some of these tanks are in Ukraine today.
