MONUMENTAL ELECTION EARTHQUAKE IN ARIZONA TONIGHT: Consumer advocates & clean energy candidates defeated Turning Point USA in a huge utility election and FLIPPED the majority of the utility board. SRP will be the largest utility in the country with a clean energy majority. 🧵
TPUSA pumped in an unprecedented amount of money into the election — no one in Arizona had ever seen anything like it before. Still, voters came out in droves against TPUSA. Turnout was more than 400% of 2024 turnout.
What’s even more wild is that SRP (which serves more than 1 million Arizonans) uses acreage-based voting: the more land you own = the more votes you win. Stacks the deck in favor of large landowners and against the little guy. Renters aren’t even eligible to vote.
Despite this very uphill terrain, the clean energy candidates & consumer advocates won — and won big.
After the massive Democratic victories we’ve seen across the country, the blue wave has now hit Arizona. Just wait until November: TPUSA is going to get crushed at the ballot box. Mark my words.

THREAD: We must cap ESAs in the budget. Allowing the out-of-control voucher scam to continue unchecked will rob our public school students of hundreds of millions of dollars & devastate our ability to make critical investments in housing, healthcare, water & more.
Only a few months ago, in her Executive Budget, Gov. Hobbs laid out a bold proposal to repeal universal vouchers. I support Gov. Hobbs’ proposal.
As @AZAGMayes correctly notes, the explosion of private vouchers is causing “a catastrophic drain on state resources” that will imperil her office’s ability to prosecute child abuse cases.

🧵 THREAD on housing and preemption.

Housing affordability is a statewide issue that won’t be solved by a patchwork of city-by-city fixes. It’s a crisis that requires bold, statewide solutions -- including preemption.
First, what is preemption? It is a legal doctrine that allows a higher level of govt to override a lower level of govt. Oftentimes, preemption looks like the federal govt banning state govt from doing something. Or a state govt stopping a city council from doing something.
Preemption is neither inherently good nor bad -- it is a tool. But for too long, Republican lawmakers in Arizona have abused preemption laws to attack our communities.
