In today’s Vatnik Soup, we introduce Yanis Varoufakis, a Greek economist and politician. He’s best known for rising to power at the height of the Greek debt crisis, not solving anything but endearing himself to the left, and using his fame to promote Russian imperialism.

1/20 Image
Born in 1961 in Athens, Varoufakis studied economics in the UK and built an academic career in Australia, the US, and Europe. His early work focused on game theory, political economy, and critiques of capitalism.

Presenting himself as the fearless, unorthodox economist willing to confront the EU’s “neoliberal” elites, he rose to prominence during Greece’s debt crisis. At its height in 2015, he was appointed finance minister under the left-wing Syriza government of Alexis Tsipras.

He resigned after six months with a controversial record. According to Tsipras himself, Varoufakis was more interested in testing his theories and promoting his books than actually fixing the Greek economy. Even Russia had refused to help at that time.

4/20 Yanis Varoufakis, the firebrand economist who rose to fame at the height of Greece’s debt drama, was not only egotistical but ultimately more interested in testing out his game theories on the nation than winning its battle to keep afloat. So writes the former prime minister Alexis Tsipras in his newly released memoir, Ithaki, as the once radical leftwing leader, sparing no punches, seeks, 10 years later, to put the record straight. “He was, in reality, more of a celebrity and less of an economist,” recalled the 51-year-old, who described handpicking the maverick as his finance minister b...
“I wanted to send the message of hard negotiation, but I underestimated the human factor. Very quickly, Varoufakis turned from being an asset into a negative protagonist. Not only could our potential allies not stand him, neither could his own colleagues.” In a chronicle of events that has been quick to send ripples through Greece, Tsipras, who appears bent on staging a political comeback two years after renouncing the leadership of the Syriza party, said it was clear the Greek Australian academic had a personal agenda that included promoting his books. Former Greek PM Tsipras savages ‘ce...
Varoufakis is active and popular in progressive and socialist circles (some of whom are not entirely vatniks and might really need to clean house a bit here): a co-founder of Progressive International, with the support of everyone’s favorite tankie, Noam Chomsky…

… he’s also a Fellow at Bernie Sanders’ Institute, in the good company of other vatniks such as Cornel West and Jeffrey Sachs, united with Bernie (previously critical of Putin) to “combat the rise of authoritarianism around the globe”. You can’t make this shit up really.

6/20 Bernie Sanders: The U.S. and our allies must impose severe sanctions on Vladimir Putin and his fellow oligarchs. At a time when thousands may die as a result of his war, Putin, one of the richest people in the world, should not be allowed to enjoy the billions he stole from the Russian people. https://x.com/SenSanders/status/1496913185093439488

Yanis is the “anti-imperialism of idiots” kind of vatnik (coined by Syrian activist Leila al-Shami): the supposed leftist who’s always criticizing Western imperialism but reveals a naïveté amounting to bad faith when it comes to Russian imperialism.

He’s also the kind of leftist who still admires Lenin, who like Stalin starved Ukrainians to death. And this is where he gets angry at Putin: not the bombings, the kidnappings of children, the murders of Ukrainians, not even the murders of Russians, no, a comparison to Lenin.8/20 Yanis Varoufakis: Putin has outdone himself: He dared compare Prigozhin to Lenin, making the absurd comparison of Wagner's mutiny to the Bolsheviks' principled stance against the inhuman WW1. A reminder to leftists who erred into tolerating Putin: He always hated the Left! https://x.com/yanisvaroufakis/status/1672578027920785409
After perfunctory condemnations of Putin, Varoufakis’s specialty is to “just imagine” what Putin has been doing or trying to do for years, such as targeting Zelenskyy or bombing hospitals. At this point, it’s not naïveté, it’s outright support for Russia’s genocidal invasion.9/20 Yanis Varoufakis: Just for one second dare to imagine the West's reaction if Putin's soldiers had invaded a packed Ukrainian hospital, to "denazify" it, prevented staff from treating thousands of injured people - mostly kids -, blown up its water pipers and brought in zero medical supplies. https://x.com/yanisvaroufakis/status/1725184386419564652
Yanis Varoufakis: Just imagine the headlines if Putin had bombed a hospital in Kharkiv killing 500 people, many of them kids, and then blamed it on the Ukrainians... Nothing makes Vlad happier than watching the West's touching attempts to overtake his callous cynicism... https://x.com/yanisvaroufakis/status/1714532809245647041
Yanis Varoufakis: What a great day for Vladimir Putin! I can picture him in the Kremlin, watching the EU & the UK play dumb while Trump trashes Int. Law, their media reporting Maduro's abduction as an 'arrest'. I bet he's thinking: Should I also detain Zelensky and subject him to Russian justice? https://x.com/yanisvaroufakis/status/2007456547652108511

Varoufakis offers no solution to those who suffer under the oppression or occupation of anti-Western regimes. He of course is privileged enough to live in the West, and can enjoy the luxury of complaining about it and lecturing everyone else from his wealth and comfort.

On Afghanistan, he came up with the astonishing “hang in there, sisters”. In January, while the Iranian regime was slaughtering protesters, his “Progressive” International explained that that’s the good kind of oppression, the non-Western kind, so nothing to worry about.

There are of course voices on the left who disagree with his embrace of Russian imperialism, especially Ukrainians or anti-war Russians. If they dare to show up at his events, Varoufakis has a very progressive and democratic solution: silencing and forcibly removing them.

12/20 Yanis Varoufakis called me a fascist, and they turned off my microphone. Varoufakis’s descent into ruscism culminated with his travelling to Moscow, to dance and help the Kremlin with their genocidal invasion of Ukraine by confusedly blaming Europe for everything. Russia never has any agency, responsibility or alternatives according to him.

13/20

Yanis Varoufakis: Why I went to Moscow: Russians are ready to compromise https://unherd.com/2026/04/why-i-went-to-moscow/ https://archive.ph/JSTnL
Fully embracing Russian imperialism, he never mentions the 2014 invasion and occupation, talking instead about “the war’s commencement” in 2022 and “disputed territories”. Russia recognized Ukraine’s borders and sovereignty without the slightest “dispute” in 1994 and 2004.

14/20 President Vladimir Putin signed a law ratifying the Treaty between Russia and Ukraine on the Russian-Ukrainian State Border, April 23, 2004 http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/30820 Treaty between Ukraine and the Russian Federation on the Ukrainian-Russian State border, January 28, 2003 https://treaties.un.org/Pages/showDetails.aspx?objid=08000002803fe18a
Memorandum on security assurances in connection with Ukraine’s accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, December 5, 1994 https://treaties.un.org/Pages/showDetails.aspx?objid=0800000280401fbb
Putin: Crimea is not a disputed territory. Unlike the case of Georgia and South Ossetia, there has been no ethnic conflict there. Russia has long recognized the borders of today’s Ukraine. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin interviewed by the German ARD TV channel, August 29, 2008 http://archive.government.ru/eng/docs/1758/
Yanis parrots all the usual Kremlin talking points, especially NATO “expansion” and Russia’s “security needs”. It’s curious that Varoufakis, a European, picks the propaganda aimed at US audiences, ignoring the “needs” of Europeans bordered by Kaliningrad and Belarus.

15/20 This leads us to the second point: NATO did not expand into “Eastern Europe.” Czechia, Poland, and Hungary in 1999 and the Baltic countries among others in 2004 actively sought membership in the alliance. This is not just semantics. For the historical reasons mentioned above, the West has been a desired political direction associated with prosperity, democracy, and freedom—despite the limitations of Western liberal capitalist democracies and the implementation of that model in Eastern Europe. Being at the receiving end of Russian imperialism, many Eastern Europeans looked forward to members...
In the westsplaining framework, the concerns of Russia are recognized but those of Eastern Europe are not. This, again, mirrors the Russian line that “Ukraine’s current regime lacks any sovereignty,” which of course also operates within a framework inherited from the bipolar world of the Cold War. Eastern Europe is something that can be explained but isn’t worth engaging with. The American Pundits Who Can’t Resist “Westsplaining” Ukraine https://newrepublic.com/article/165603/carlson-russia-ukraine-imperialism-nato
The Kremlin has stressed its sovereign right to deploy missiles on Russian territory after reports that the country deployed the Iskander nuclear-capable missile system in Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea. Russia claims right to deploy Kaliningrad missiles https://www.dw.com/en/russia-deploys-nuclear-capable-missile-system-in-kaliningrad-reports/a-42474925
Yanis Varoufakis: Yes, NATO expansion, the 2014 CIA coup in Kyiv and the subsequent ban of Russian in the Donbas (a form of ethnic cleansing) were serious provocations - and, indeed, violations of International Law. Russia has legitimate reasons to be outraged at the US-EU behaviour. https://x.com/yanisvaroufakis/status/2008592055350743490 SK Media: Hi @yanisvaroufakis, I was just wondering if you were aware that Ukraine was not joining NATO, there was no CIA coup, and russian has never been banned in Ukraine. These seem like important facts you weren't aware of. https://x.com/SpaghettiKoz...
Of course, Putin is *not* ready to compromise. Varoufakis’s vatnik lies serve only one purpose: shift the window of acceptability to help Russians get away with their war crimes and conquests. Far from avoiding war, he works to push Ukraine to reward the genocidal invader.

16/20US intelligence indicates Putin's war aims in Ukraine are unchanged https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/us-intelligence-indicates-putins-war-aims-ukraine-are-unchanged-2025-12-19/ Putin's goal remains the complete surrender of Ukraine – US intelligence https://news.liga.net/en/politics/news/putins-goal-remains-the-complete-surrender-of-ukraine-us-intelligence
Institute for the Study of War: Kremlin officials formally rejected the possibility of a ceasefire on any terms other than the complete capitulation of Ukraine and the West on February 24, further underscoring Russia's unwillingness to make compromises during future peace negotiations. Russian officials also continue to frame Russia's demand for Ukrainian forces to withdraw from territory that Ukrainian forces currently control in eastern and southern Ukraine as a “compromise.” https://x.com/TheStudyofWar/status/1894243927685042563
When the US made major peace proposals in 2025, Ukraine backed every single one, signaling a willingness to engage on both ceasefires and long-term agreements. Russia rejected them all. How Many US-Led Peace Proposals Has Russia Rejected? A Timeline https://united24media.com/war-in-ukraine/how-many-us-led-peace-proposals-has-russia-rejected-a-timeline-14251
He also claims that Putin needs to bring home a victory to justify Russians’ “sacrifices”, a completely twisted approach. Putin and Russians under his orders have committed crimes that should not be encouraged — an economist should understand some basics about incentives.

17/20To envisage this second option, a European offer of a peace and security pact, there are three prerequisites. First, the abandonment of the delusion that the offered pact should contain nothing that Putin can present as a victory. All pacts, agreements, peace deals, etc., must offer each signatory things they can present as great gains to their own constituency. Yanis Varoufakis: Why I went to Moscow: Russians are ready to compromise https://unherd.com/2026/04/why-i-went-to-moscow/ https://archive.ph/JSTnL
Varoufakis still remembers his “economics” background though when it comes to justifying the self-destructive militarization of Russian society, rejoicing at how the mass production of terror weapons “energised factories that lay dormant since the end of the Soviet Union.”

18/20 Russia is now trapped in a maze with no easy way out: sluggish growth and soaring prices, with annual increases in the double digits. The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, once a showcase and symbol of Russia’s strength in the global market, turned a couple of weeks ago into a parade of Putinism — though not a particularly cheerful one. “We are on the brink of a recession,” admitted Economic Development Minister Maxim Reshetnikov. The reserves that had supported the country’s finances in recent years, added Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina, “are depleted.” Russia on the ...

With his brilliant insights such as this “military Keynesianism”, and if sanctions are so good for Russia, it’s really a pity Varoufakis didn’t make his whole career there instead of Greece: he could have advised them early on to just sanction themselves into oblivion.

19/20 Four years of sanctions and war have achieved the opposite result. They rebalanced Russia’s current account, energized factories that lay dormant since the end of the Soviet Union, transferred foreign-owned companies to Russian oligarchs and kept oligarchic profits within Russia. Thus, the sanctions combined with military Keynesianism to stabilize Putin’s reign. Meanwhile, despite its impressive resistance on the battlefields, Ukraine’s economy is being steadily weakened while Europe is trapped in a geostrategic conundrum of its own making and the new oil crisis engineered by Israel and the...

In this 8th Debunk of the Day, we’ll discuss complaints about US financing of NATO, in particular how the US allegedly pays for European defense, leading to calls for a US withdrawal from the Alliance — which would only make it easier for Putin to invade more countries.

1/7 A flight of French and Polish Rafale and F-16 fighter jets above a NATO flag during the opening of the exhibition “Powerful because we are united”, dedicated to the 19th anniversary of Lithuania’s 2004 accession to NATO (OTD 22 years ago), in the bastion of the Vilnius defensive wall on March 29, 2023 (OTD 3 years ago) in Vilnius, Lithuania. NATO by itself costs peanuts. In fact, the core of NATO is a principle, an agreement, that ideally costs nothing. The main cost is defense spending, which the US is eagerly doing anyway: Trump has just announced a 50% increase in military spending for his “Department of War”.

To sow division and thereby weaken the Alliance, vatniks deliberately mix up different figures, such as contributions to the NATO common budget, with defense spending. And US military spending has been huge by the sheer fact that the US is the world’s largest economy.

3/7 Newsweek falsely claiming that the US pays 68% of NATO’s budget. The real number is 15%.

Elon Musk falsely claiming that the US pays for 2/3 of European defense. In another post he claimed it was 1/4. Both made-up numbers. https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1870903805845598428 https://x.com/i/birdwatch/t/1870903805845598428
NATO has annual budgets and programs worth around EUR 4.6 billion in 2025 (representing 0.3% of total Allied defence spending), and up to EUR 5.3 billion in 2026. The US share for 2026-2027 is 15% of that: 0.8 billion. Source: Funding NATO https://www.nato.int/en/what-we-do/introduction-to-nato/funding-nato

In today’s Vatnik Soup, we’ll talk about why we’re doing this: why we think Ukraine is so important and why we believe that souping vatniks and debunking their propaganda narratives is so crucial to counter Russia’s & their allies’ wars of aggression and achieve real peace.

1/20 Image
War is expensive, and Russia is not a rich country that could afford this: Hospitals? Roads? Plumbing? No: everything into terror and destruction.

But not only that. There is a 2nd item in the Russian state budget that remains strong no matter what:

Manufacturing support for that terror and destruction. Propaganda. Vatniks. “Innocent” travel bloggers. “Independent” journalists. “Patriotic” politicians. Russia spends hundreds of billions of rubles a year ($5 billion) on this, and that kind of money buys you A LOT of BS.

In this second (and possibly last) Basiji Soup, we’ll explore how the Islamic Republic of Iran has prepared for a conflict with the US and Israel. We won’t cover the military aspects, but another kind of war — information warfare.

1/20 Image
In the 1st Basiji Soup, we souped the Islamic Republic, its disinformation operations, its hypocrisy, its support of terrorism including Russia’s, its (one-sided?) relationship with Putin, and the mass protests against it that started two months ago:

The Internet blackout has been crucial in allowing the regime to cover up its massacre of the protesters and especially the scope of it, making it difficult to assess the number of victims. They went to great lengths to jam Starlink, after having made its use illegal.

In this 7th Debunk of the Day, we’ll expose the “Chickenhawk” fallacy. The chickenhawk accusation or the “go to the front!” imperative is a dishonest attempt to silence anyone supporting Ukraine by pushing them to go fight. A barely hidden death wish, as it’s always uttered…
1/5 Image

…with zero regard for who you are or what your personal circumstances might be — you could already be there, on your way there, a veteran, or unable to fight. More broadly, not everyone can or should be a soldier, just as not everyone can or should be a policeman or a nurse.
2/5 Image

Yet a society still needs those things to be done, and the fact that not everyone can go to medical school or fight crime does not mean that we have to surrender to invaders and criminals, nor that we cannot all have an opinion on healthcare.

In this 6th Debunk of the Day, we’ll talk about a complex and controversial topic: conscription. It is used by vatniks to attack Ukraine for drafting men to fight, while conveniently ignoring the alternative, including the horrors of conscription into the Russian army.
1/8 Image
Military obligations are a reality in many countries, from the most peaceful democracies to the most tyrannical dictatorships — unless you have “bone spurs”. Some argue it is a necessity for defense against invading armies, especially for small countries.
2/8 Image
Others point out that it goes against individual rights or that a professional army is better. And Zelenskyy might agree: he did in fact end conscription. But then a full-scale invasion happened: exactly why many nations, including the US, still keep some form of draft.

In today’s Vatnik Soup, we’ll introduce the International Olympic Committee (IOC) @Olympics . It’s mostly known for organizing sporting events, and for being supposed to foster the Olympic ideal while actually submitting to dictators.

1/15 Image
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was founded in 1894 in Paris by Pierre de Coubertin with a noble goal: promote peace through sports. Politics out, sportsmanship in: sounds great in theory.

2/15 Image
But in practice, the IOC has a long history of accommodating authoritarian regimes, always in the name of “neutrality,” “dialogue,” and “keeping sports separate from politics”, usually not in a particularly consistent or moral way.
