Society, like an orchard, can sicken for different reasons. The cure depends on what those reasons are. Sometimes it just needs a little pruning, fertilizer, or spray. But what if our society is afflicted by the worst of the worst? What if it has root rot?
I define root rot as a disease where the fundamental virtues necessary for a society to self-correct are corrupted or destroyed, such that cultural criticism can no longer improve its health. Let's think about whether our society might be suffering from this disease.
You wouldn't (intentionally) send your kid to a school that taught him lies and trained him in bad habits, because you'd expect it to harm his character. However, this is exactly what our society has been doing for years.
Root rot.
Not only at school. Our entertainment and advertisements and politics are all full of lies and pandering. And a lifetime of exposure to lies and pandering affects beliefs, habits, and character. Eventually all this has an effect.
Root rot.
This isn't just a list of grumpy complaints about the modern world. To determine the cure you have to identify the disease. Otherwise you'll waste time and energy with fixes that simply can't have any impact.
(Here's a pretty tree to remind you how good things COULD be.)
Sometimes you drive past an orchard that looked perfectly fine a few weeks ago. Yet suddenly most of the trees are dead, and a while later the farmer tears them all out. Why didn't he just prune them and spray off the bugs? Because it wouldn't work. Root rot.
If people are deluded by a few surface-level lies and illusions, it's possible to dispel them by talking them through and presenting the facts. But if people have bad mental and emotional habits on the most basic level, this stops working.
Root rot.
Today's information economy has corrupted the public's sensibilities and virtues to the point that they no longer have the capacity for honest self-reflection. And this makes cultural engagement at the level of flowers and branches a waste of time.
Today surface fixes that made sense in the past just don't land. And the right diagnosis is the most unpopular of all. Who wants to hear that their basic habits have sickened? Nobody. They'll send you packing and go back to the panderers.
Root rot. Usually, it's terminal.

For some reason there are fake statistics about breast-implant complication rates and durability going around Twitter right now. I don't want to write a long thread about this, but I'll do a quick summary to correct the wrong ideas.👇
First of all, when implants first became popular in the 90s complication rates were very high. If you quote studies from that time you can make them seem like a terrible idea that's sure to fail. That's because surgeons didn't know what they were doing yet.
But complication rates have gone down and down. Surgeons have been doing hundreds of thousands of augmentations a year for thirty years now. That's a huge medical industry working to improve outcomes. And they succeeded. If you look at studies over time, they get safer and safer.
For various psychological reasons it's effectively impossible for the average woman to accept the truth about feminine beauty, or even react to it neutrally. This is mainly because they are... 1/n
...psychologically dependent on feeling perfectly desirable, as described in the passage above.
In short, they have big egos they can't live up to.
By consequence, only women who are already near the ideal in basic respects, or who have an "autistic" interest in truth, or usually both, are able to tolerate the truth and benefit from it. These well-positioned women may be shocked at the vehement reactions of their friends.
Do men really enjoy it more than women? And what does this mean for our relationships? The answer might surprise you. If you want to hear the most controversial claim of the week, keep reading.🧵
Are the headline statistics misleading?
A few months ago I posted a thread on the pleasure gap, which I quickly deleted. I've reformatted that thread as an appendix to my essay THE ILLUSION OF DOMINANCE. It's a bit racy, so I won't post it all here. You can continue reading at the link below.
Most people seem to think nothing important is happening. They are still posting about baseball and influencers, and don't understand why I would drop everything to argue against this war. In this thread I'll share my view for my readers.
First of all, this war was started by the US and Israel without justification. National interest aside, it is morally wrong to go starting wars without justification. The stain of this unnecessary violence will haunt America for years to come.
The war rhetoric coming out of the Department of Defense is highly disturbing, and in some cases nakedly evil.
Renaming the DoD the Department of War is a red flag in itself. Promoting real violence with video game clips is psychotic. I could go on, but I won't....
Americans are being ripped off by low taxes. Wait - LOW taxes? Yes, low taxes.
Healthcare costs are skyrocketing to a significant extent because the US is insisting on a weird private insurance model instead of just taxing.
Building energy code is forcing huge costs on new...
homes that are very inefficient with respect to their stated goals. If reducing carbon is the goal, it would be cheaper and more cost effective just to build cleaner power plants instead of overregulating construction.
The results of the above are wasteful and clear for all to see. Thus, they erode trust in government. The irony is that this distrust makes Americans want to insist even harder on not solving these problem through taxation.
In other words, psychological lock-in, to a bad system.
