1/ Regarding Dept. of Homeland Security Sec. Chad Wolf's visit:
As part of a statewide law enforcement delegation to discuss recent responses to demonstrations in Portland, I was invited to meet with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf...
2/ I was under the impression this was going to be a thoughtful, honest and open discussion, but following statements made by Sec. Wolf, it became clear law enforcement in the City of Portland was becoming highly politicized, and for that reason, I declined to meet.
3/ Protests are among the most difficult events to manage in policing today. We have a responsibility to safeguard the right of people to assemble and engage in free speech, while balancing other rights guaranteed in our Constitution, including maintaining public order...
(1/5) At the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, we believe in the sanctity of life and treating everyone with dignity and respect. As public safety professionals, we must ensure that our agency values align with the communities we serve.
(2/5) We have a moral responsibility to protect people in our custody from harm. The actions that led to the death of George Floyd are indefensible. They go against our training & our code of ethics. The involved officers demonstrated a callousness that's difficult to comprehend.
(3/5) We appreciated the swift response by Minneapolis Chief of Police Medaria Arradondo to terminate the officers and ask for an independent criminal investigation.
Today I submitted my testimony to #ORLeg House Judiciary Committee in support of #HB4145, a bill to close a dangerous loophole & better protect victims of domestic violence, as well as law enforcement who respond to their calls for help. Full text: facebook.com/notes/mike-ree…
My team at @MultCoSO responded to 21 domestic assaults involving firearms last year. Domestic abusers are dangerous individuals & the loophole allows them to possess firearms if they're not married to their victim – even if the victim filed a restraining order. #ORLEG
@MultCoSO Simply put, #HB4145 would take guns out of dangerous and volatile situations by prohibiting domestic abusers with restraining orders and convicted stalkers from possessing firearms. #orleg
