OK y'all, mark this on your calendars because at 8PM Eastern we are beginning the reading of Hillbilly Elegy
brought to you by me, the whiskey I'll be drinking, and the people who buy the whiskey to keep me reading.
Before we get into this, a few things about me for the folk who are new here. I live in Appalachia and I write about poverty. Specifically, I write about rural poverty 'cause that's what I know. This is where I went to high school:

I am way too big a fan of Jesus to want to be called a Christian. Largely, this is because of the Sermon on the Mount, specifically the bit about the Pharisees.
So I am absolutely convinced that Jesus would be on an archer-style rampage. A few tables would be the least of it.
can you imagine, I nearly hope the Christians are right about the whole Calvinism thing just so I can get up to the big sorting and watch Jesus be like “this guy gave you my name? Nah, I don’t know that guy, he isn’t on the list” to like half the people that profaned his work
And mind you I do mean Revelations-style Antichrist figures, for those of you who read the Left Behind series as kids. We have entered the part where agents of perdition are creatively ruining everything, if you love apocalyptic religious fiction, it’s the end times.
I figure it’s about an hour or so before #qanda (hi y’all!) and so anyone still talking #auspol at this hour might be some of the folks reaching out wondering what the hell Aussie journos are doing getting shot in LA.
Briefly:
Firstly, for those who don’t know me my name is Linda and if you’re an Aussie who recognizes me you either saw me briefly on your news years ago or you saw my face right before surgery back in 2020 after I took a police round to the face while I was reporting on protests.
Now. In order to explain what’s happened here, you’ve got to understand the system we work in. We’ve got fifty states and territories, with each having its own laws and cities and counties within the states having theirs. The only rule is a lower law doesn’t overrule the higher.
