Bastogne, Belgium. 1944. Walk with us this morning.

We're on the lines with the 101st Airborne. Encircled and outgunned, holding Bastogne. Numb hands and feet, freezing in the dirty snow.

The Germans expect surrender.

They expect wrong.

#battleofthebulge We're at Pvt. 1st Class Leo Palma's foxhole when the Germans arrive. He describes them as warm, bundled up in overcoats. Leather boots shined and oiled. A world apart from him.

The single biggest loss of life in the 101st Airborne wasn't during World War II. It wasn't during combat at all. It happened in Gander, Newfoundland, 35 years ago today, in the blink of an eye. 1/8 248 Soldiers and eight crew members died when Arrow Air flight 1285 crashed just after takeoff. They were returning from a deployment. They were coming home. 2/8
