WE HAVE SOME SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED!

The editor/translator of the book I've been working from, one Mr A Hamilton Thompson, was pedantic and thorough in the best tradition of Edwardian British Local Historians (IYKYK).

Alnwick was good friends with Ralph "Sweep the Floor" Cromwell
Image is of the tweeter's research book, page xv of the Introduction. A couple of lines are highlighted in yellow. They read "and among his political friends he appears to have counted Ralph, Lord Cromwell, whom he joined in the foundation of the college of Tattershall." They

Oct 6, 1440. A day that will live in infamy.

At least if you've been following along with the ongoing chaos that was Bardney Abbey.

For lo! we have arrived at Parchmentgate.

Image shows a large sheet of poster paper covered in brightly-coloured post-its connected by brightly-coloured string. The information content will be discussed in detail in the following thread of tweets. On October 6th, 1440, Bishop Alnwick arrives at Bardney and IMMEDIATELY calls the monks to appear in front of him in tribunal. He's really unhappy.

Welcome back! After double-checking the document and adding in some complaints I missed the first time around, I have some numbers!

In total, 72 accusations were levelled against named persons by 10 out of 16 monks living at Bardney Abbey. (cont) All 72 accusations are made against only 10 of the monks.

8 of the complainants level accusations against Brother Bartone, 1 doesn't specify an accusation but asks for the bishop to intercede with him with the abbot, and 1 is Brother Bartone.

Tune in tomorrow to see how close my guess is on the percentage of complaints involving Brother Bartone. I spent 4 hours charting this out today.
There are 16 monks at Bardney Abbey in 1436. I'm guessing of all the various complaints, 80% involve Bartone.
Photograph shows an expanded version of the chart paper in the previous tweet. Colour coded post-its are arranged in columns, connected by red string. There are a lot of strings. They connect the names in the left column to accusations in the right column. A lot of the strings connect to one particular person. The breakdown of the accusations is only tangential to my interest in this record, but I'm fascinated by it. I'm going to enjoy looking through the numbers tomorrow. And I never really know what part of a document analysis will suddenly turn on the lightbulb.

When your teenage nephew asks you to tell the story of the Erfurt Latrine Disaster, how can you not?

Guys, pay attention to that title. This is gonna get messy.

(Hi, Nephew! *waves*) I had to do some digging on this one, since Germanic/Polish medieval history is a bit out of my wheelhouse. Specifically, I know fuck all about it. But "Erfurt Latrine Disaster" was just too compelling NOT to research.
