Thread 🧵: Porphyry of Tyre (c. 234 – c. 305 CE). Born in Tyre, from Syrian parents, was an Arab pagan Neoplatonist philosopher 🏛️, best known for his critiques of Christianity ✍️he wrote “Against the Christians.”


Porphyry’s name initially was Malchus (“king”) A very common Arab Nabatean name. He studied in Athens under Longinus and later with Plotinus in Rome 🏛️. Beyond philosophy, he heavily promoted vegetarianism 🌿, explored math, music 🎶, and edited the Homeric Questions ✨.
