These hearings seek public input re:specific plans being made NOW to take NY’s climate goals - laid out in nation’s most ambitious climate law - from dream to reality. Process can seem obscure & bureaucratic but has huge impact on NYers’ $$, health, living conditions & future 1/2 For great real-time coverage on the nitty-gritty of the Climate Action Council & implementation of the CLCPA (NY state climate law) follow local climate journos @m_jfrench @lissaharris @sssmaldo! I do.

Feel free to reply w/other greats that I have likely forgotten to add.

No excuse. If correct, then the story is that TWO journalists were killed while working for Fox. Period. More on Oleksandra Kuvshynova, Ukrainian journalist also killed, apparently while working with Fox.

In fairness we - journalists like @LizSly - and especially Syrians who risked lives to document this & many other techniques now being reused in Ukraine - have been filling in the world for a decade and more. Unfortunately, I concur w/warning. Years of our Syria reporting, capped w/@malachybrowne & VI team’s definitive documentation, show Russian/Syrian govs purposely target medical sites, including on UN no-hit lists. No smoking gun that UN handed over GPS data, but NGOs are v wary.

Serious q: Is “reasonable certainty” the official standard to blow up a person driving a car in a city? (After covering 20 yrs of wars, I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s even looser)
How is that defined? Another serious q below.
Based on work of many journalists + @CivCenter (RIP Marla 💕) @hrw @amnesty @airwars etc it’s fair to guess at least many thousands … —>

“I started sobbing.., overwhelmed by the losses we were about to see. I could feel my brain trying to peel itself away from the information... I did not want to look directly at it. But I had to write the story anyway. I wanted to write the story.”

Excellent piece @OliviaMesser! Some subsets of journalists have been canaries in the trauma/moral injury coal mine for years in different ways.

War/conflict journalists.
Black journalists.
I could go on.

But Covid makes serious engagement w/this issue—I think/hope—unavoidable for the news industry.

The moral injury (and moral hazard) visited on US troops over the past 20 years of relentless deployment cycles to arenas where the truth is treated as fungible is not irrelevant to our current situation, what's more.

cc: @AzmatZahra @airwars @PhilKlay @elliotackerman et al I should write an essay on watching Trump's election from Damascus, on a Syrian govt propaganda tour that didn't even try to feign truth. The black=white gaslighting that was extreme in 2016 even for Assad's PR is now routine in US politics. @KyleYSpencer

Hundreds of people gathered for an intense but quiet 2+hr vigil at Astoria Park in Queens, w/impromptu speeches from a diverse group of residents united against police brutality and racism. Grace, 7, holding a sign honoring George Floyd, said the vigil made her happy. “I don’t like when the police killed him.”
Dad Albert Michaeel: “Everyone has to chip in.”
Mom Sylvia: “Everyone deserves to be respected, and to live.”

The most surprising news in a long time, in an era of shocking news. Suleimani wasn't just visible and public in his movements. He was flamboyantly, deliberately so, appearing on social media on front lines in Syria & Iraq & visiting Moscow.

For the first time, Congress has passed sanctions not only on Syrian security officials but on companies doing business w/the government, until there is accountability for industrial-scale state torture and other war crimes. Some background in this thread: Our investigation into the vast system of torture prisons that Bashar al-Assad used to suppress the uprising in Syria, especially civilian dissent: nytimes.com/2019/05/11/wor…

Marie Colvin was many journalists' hero. She risked her life countless times, over decades, to expose war crimes and abuses of power by forces of every political stripe, from Sri Lanka to Gaza to Iraq to Syria, where she was killed. /1 Marie was killed on Feb. 22, 2012, in a Syrian government artillery barrage on a makeshift press center in the besieged, rebel-held neighborhood of Baba Amr, in Homs. Photojournalist Remi Ochlik was killed too. /2
