We’re here at the #NCGA for the House Judiciary Committee Hearing. Today they’ll be hearing HB 942, the SHALOM Act. This bill does nothing to protect Jewish North Carolinians and instead erodes our fundamental right to free speech.

This week, a troubling piece of legislation, HB 237, passed its 3rd reading. We are deeply concerned about the implications of this bill, which enhances punishment for crimes based on how a person is dressed. 🧵
The provisions of the bill that ascribe intent to clothing are confusing and will unfairly result in disparate treatment under the law. Particularly given the inclusion of hoods in the legislation, HB 237 is likely to result in racially biased sentencing.
