Don’t let the EU off the hook on free speech. We wrote to the European Commission to remind Brussels exactly how the DSA imperils free expression. 🧵

In their November review of the DSA, the Commission had the opportunity to address free speech concerns head-on. Instead, they swept them under the carpet and kicked the can down the road until 2027.

But the DSA is already shaping what people can say online now.

NOW: The Supreme Court trial of Finnish MP Päivi Räsänen for a Bible tweet begins this morning.

If convicted, Päivi faces thousands of euros in fines, for peacefully expressing her Christian views online.

Päivi truly is the face of European censorship. Watch here for updates. Also on trial for alleged “hate speech” today in Helsinki is Lutheran Bishop Juhana Pohjola, who merely published a pamphlet written by Päivi in 2004—over 20 years ago—on her Christian understanding of marriage and sexuality.

Earlier this month, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was met with boos in the European Parliament (watch below) as she announced the EU’s latest censorship tool: The European Democracy Shield.

But what is the Democracy Shield?🧵 Presented as a “defence” against foreign interference, the Democracy Shield, if implemented, would in fact set up an offensive censorship regime with global reach.

👉She was recently granted asylum in Europe, becoming the first Brazilian to receive refugee protection for her speech against gender ideology.

Between 2017 and 2024, Algerian authorities shut down all but one of the country’s 50 Protestant churches.

The crackdown on Algeria’s Christian community has reached a crisis point.
 
🧵 Here’s what you should know: The government’s stated reasons for closing these churches include lapsed registration licenses and vague building safety issues. All are pretexts. 

In reality, these church closures are part of a broader policy to suffocate non-Islamic religious life in Algeria.

🚨Today, the EU takes a significant step toward strengthening online censorship, transforming the "Code of Conduct on Disinformation" into a mandatory part of the Digital Services Act.

The DSA threatens free speech across the world and must be repealed. The EU’s DSA has created one of the most dangerous censorship regimes of the digital age. It is an authoritarian framework that enables unelected bureaucrats to control online speech at scale—both in Europe and globally—under the guise of “safety” and “protecting democracy”.

🚨TOMORROW, we hear the verdict in the case of Adam Smith-Connor - the army veteran charged for 3 mins of silent prayer near an abortion facility.

This could be the 1st time in modern British history

where someone is convicted for a prayer.🙏🧵 Officers interrogated Adam, "what is the nature of your prayer?" when he was found standing silently inside a censorial "buffer zone" (spread across several streets) in Bournemouth in Nov 2022.

Adam was praying, imperceptibly, about a child he had lost to abortion 22 years prior.

The prayer has cost him dearly.

BREAKING: We have urgently petitioned the Inter American Commission on Human Rights, which has authority over Brazil under the American Convention.

The censorship from the Supreme Federal Court and Superior Electoral Court violate intl law.

NOW is the time to intervene. The banning of X and targeting of @elonmusk @shellenberger @marcelvanhattem and others is symptomatic of a severe endemic problem.

Per recent surveys, the majority of Brazilians are afraid to share their views in public.
