The 2023 AP US Government and Politics scores: 5: 13%; 4: 11%; 3: 25%; 2: 24%; 1: 27%. These scores and the required points are consistent over the past decade. I wish colleges were less stringent in the points they require for 3s/4s/5s in this subject! 43 students so far, out of 332,000 who took this year’s AP US Government & Politics Exam, achieved all 120/120 points possible across their essays and exam questions. We’ll notify them and their schools in the fall when late exam scoring is complete.

The 2023 AP US History scores: 5: 11%; 4: 15%; 3: 22%; 2: 23%; 1: 29%. 2 students so far, out of 473,000 who took this year’s AP US History Exam, earned all 140/140 points possible across their essays and questions; we’ll notify them and their schools in the fall after all late exam scoring is complete.

The 2023 AP English Language & Composition scores: 5: 10%; 4: 20%; 3: 26%; 2: 29%; 1: 15%. Big praise: AP English Lang teachers achieved the largest equity/access gains of any subject (40,000 more students admitted this year) and scores increased as well. 18 students so far, out of 568,000 who took the AP English Language Exam, earned all 100/100 points possible across this year’s essays and questions. We’ll notify them and their schools in the fall when all late exam scoring is complete.

The 2023 AP European History scores: 5: 13%; 4: 21%; 3: 25%; 2: 29%; 1: 12%. AP European History students demonstrated strongest understanding of topics from 1450-1648 CE (Units 1-2), with 21% of students earning 90-100% of such points, but also scored very well on topics from 1914-present (Units 8-9).

The 2023 AP Chemistry scores: 5: 15%; 4: 27%; 3: 33%; 2: 17%; 1: 8%. The impressive AP Chemistry score distributions align with the latest sequent course performance data from colleges, which found that a much larger proportion of AP Chemistry students is now outperforming college peers when placing ahead.

Rare to see such impressive gains as these: AP World History teachers expanded access to ~40,000 more students, and scores increased significantly – with an especially large jump in the % of 5s. As a result, 36,000 more students earned scores of 3+ this year than last! The 2023 AP World History scores: 5: 15%; 4: 22%; 3: 28%; 2: 22%; 1: 13%. (Congrats – this year’s group earned what are easily the all-time high scores in this subject for as long as I’ve posted these.)

The 2023 AP Environmental Science scores: 5: 8%; 4: 28%; 3: 17%; 2: 27%; 1: 20%. A very big year for AP Environmental Science teachers and students: 14,000 more students than last year have earned scores of 3+ on the AP Env Science exam. Teachers maintained quality while expanding access to 16% more students than in 2022.

The 2023 AP Comparative Government & Politics scores: 5: 16%; 4: 23%; 3: 32%; 2: 16%; 1: 13%. Bravo to AP Comparative Govt teachers & students; reviewing the past 13 years of AP Comparative Government performance, only the 2021 students demonstrated (slightly) stronger mastery (and thus had a 1% higher percentage of 3+ scores) than this year’s superb group.

The 2023 AP Art History scores:
5: 13%; 4: 23%; 3: 28%; 2: 24%; 1: 12%. Kudos to AP Art History teachers and students; 16% more students gained access to this exciting subject this year, and (in the 13 years I’ve been tracking this) earned higher scores on the full-length exam than any other group except the class of 2018.

The 2023 AP Computer Science Principles scores:
5: 12%; 4: 23%; 3: 33%; 2: 20%; 1: 12%. Educators expanded access to AP Computer Science Principles for ~31,000 additional students this year – a massive 22% increase – and scores remained virtually the same as when fewer students had such opportunities last year, a testament to educators’ belief in student potential.

The 2023 AP English Literature & Composition scores: 5: 15%; 4: 28%; 3: 34%; 2: 14%; 1: 9%. 2 students so far, out of ~361,000 worldwide, have earned all 120/120 points possible on this year’s AP English Literature exam. We’ll notify them and their schools in early fall when all late exam scoring is complete.

I’ve just arrived in Cincinnati to check in with the great faculty scoring the AP French and AP Spanish exams, but some other AP subjects have completed the majority of scoring work, so I’ll be able to start posting results tomorrow. But first, a few quick reminders: Reminder #1: These scores represent a critical mass of scored exams, but faculty will continue to score late arriving exams throughout June. So we don’t upload scores for educators and students to view until all subjects are complete. Scores will be posted on July 5.

The 2022 AP Chinese scores – note that the changes from 2021 to 2022 are primarily due to a smaller percentage of Chinese nationals and heritage speakers in this year’s group, not a significant decline in classroom learners’ proficiency: 54 students, out of ~16,000 worldwide, earned all 120/120 points possible on this year’s AP Chinese Exam. We’ll notify these students and their schools in mid-September when all late exams are scored.

The 2022 AP Psychology scores: 2 students, out of ~295,000 worldwide, earned all 150/150 points possible on this year’s AP Psychology Exam. We’ll notify them and their schools in mid-September when all late scoring is complete.

The 2022 AP Music Theory scores: In addition to earning generally high scores on MC questions about Music Fundamentals units 1 and 2, AP Music Theory students scored very well on Unit 6, Embellishments, Motives, and Melodic Devices; ~14% of students earned perfect scores on that unit.

The 2022 AP German Exam scores: 1 student, out of ~5,000 worldwide, earned all 130/130 points possible on this year’s AP German Exam. We’ll notify the student and school in mid-September when scoring of all late exams is complete.

The 2022 AP Statistics scores: 5 students, out of ~219,000 worldwide, earned all 100 points possible on this year’s AP Statistics Exam. We’ll notify them and their schools in mid-September when all late scoring is complete.

A truly inspiring increase in AP English Literature scores this year, the result of years of effort from AP teachers and an accumulation of powerful data from colleges on how well AP students are performing in further college English courses after placing out of the intro course: 3 students, out of ~342,000 worldwide, earned all 120 points possible from each professor/reader across all essays and exam questions on this year’s AP English Literature Exam.
