I've seen this question floating around Christian Twitter: "Why won't folks on Twitter just accept a heartfelt apology?"

I can tell you why I won't.

I used to just accept. The theology of forgiveness in Christianity is very important to me; but it's not tied to repentance.

1/? The offender has no right to demand forgiveness from those harmed. Their restoring to wholeness does depend on an act of forgiveness, it depends on an act of repentance. This requires not an apology, but real change and repair to their victims.

This is a beautiful thing. If there's anything I've learned in the last 2.5 yrs, it's that mutuality is basic to ethics period.

I think the more we introduce hierarchy where none is required, the worse off we are.
