Some evidence on time to the (Econ) PhD...

Turns out median age at the PhD has fallen over the last 2-3 decades, in econ as well as soc sci and STEM.
🤔 1/n Image But wait, don't we frequently hear how much more is expected of students applying to Econ PhDs?

This is harder to see in the data, but one explanation is that requirements for more full-time preparation mean that students need to go "straight through" or not at all. 2/n

🚨NEW: The @uscensusbureau Household Pulse Survey has started asking Americans if they have been diagnosed with Covid. Here’s what these new data show…

First, almost 15% of respondents report a Covid diagnosis. This is considerably higher than the rate of confirmed cases, of about 8%. Could this be correct? The HPS asks if a provider has diagnosed you with Covid. This diagnosis may have been made without a confirmatory test. So it’s possible, but the difference deserves more study.

I share the overall view that we are in a very different place in the pandemic economy than we were in April, but a lot of people are still very exposed to severe hardship that may last a long time.

To list a few: childcare will be provided for elementary aged children of first responders, schools/districts directed to incorporate *all* employees in their distance learning delivery, ...

In the last few weeks, I’ve had several questions about declining long-distance migration in the US, both on twitter and IRL. \Thread with what my co-authors and I think is going on… 1/n 2/n. While it’s generally true that the decline in migration since (at least) 1980 is not well explained, RMolly, CSmith and I attribute this to declines in labor market transitions.

Like so many, I was dismayed by this story. So, I decided to see what economics had contributed to our understanding of DV. To assess, I searched NBER for “domestic violence” in the title/abstract. I didn’t expect to find much. I didn’t. But what was there is powerful. Thread… 2. My search turned up six papers. I completely acknowledge the limitations of this search.
