Oh, a dump of Marco Rubio links over the years? Sure, let's start with the 2012 overview motherjones.com/politics/2012/… Continuing on to Rubio's peculiar working friendship with David Rivera, a totally normal and ethical guy motherjones.com/politics/2010/…

A fun thing to do with right-wing personalities lamenting the "Stalinist" injustice of the Alex Jones verdict is to go back and see what they said on social media about the Gawker verdict Shot:

Remember when Reagan said no sportsman or home-defender needed an AK-47?
Remember when the NRA worked with FDR's New Deal Congress to effectively ban machine guns?
Probably not. @mehdirhasan lays out how far to the right gun culture skews now... and why: "Gun culture" was always conservative, but never monolithic. Even in the 80s, gun shows had guys hawking Trilateral conspiracy theories and selling Basement Bomber how-to books. But what was fringe has been elevated as essential to "gun guy" identity by their media, lobby, & pols

"More people in the US probably die from semiautomatic gunfire in any given month than have died from machine gun fire since FDR was president," because "a rigorous, thoughtful, evolving set of regulations" has made machine guns extremely rare. newrepublic.com/article/157147… Movies and video games feature a lot of machine-gun violence, but these are not the weapons you see in American mass murders... because they're not readily available. But tons of AR-15 variants are. Image

I'm tired of the means-testing arguments coming in hot and heavy, even from some ostensible liberals, so here's a frank thread on my finances and why student debt has felt like a form of indentured servitude for me. /1 Here is the full disclosure.

I'm a 43 year-old single father.

I make $111,394 annually.

Big success story, right?!

But my lifetime average annual earnings are still $44,288. Because journalism.

And I owe $131,983 in student debt. /2

I fed myself a lot in my 20s teaching AP, SAT, GRE and LSAT prep. The Venn diagram of people who spend lavishly on those services and people who perk up at Tucker's racist LSAT diatribe is *almost* a perfect circle A few years back I was headhunted to lead a team creating and teaching a private school's branded SAT prep curriculum. Its tuition and fees top out at $36k. (Incidentally, recent sanctions might hit their enrollment.) I declined after an off-color remark by my interviewer

Neo-nazis, carrying banners with links to their neo-Nazi website, rallied in Orlando this weekend. Many Floridians wondered where Gov. Ron DeSantis was to condemn it. This was the response from the governor's spokeswoman. And after deleting the tweet, the Florida governor's press secretary continued to encourage misinformation that the neo-Nazis were an op floridapolitics.com/archives/49158…

My libertarian anti-woke gun-toting dad had an argument with a fellow white guy who was repeating the latest right-wing talking points on Kyle Rittenhouse. "I can't believe anyone is defending a minor taking a rifle across state lines to shoot protesters," dad says. "Insane." My pop is pretty torqued at the lionization of a teen for crossing state lines to "go vigilante." As a lifelong law-abiding gun owner who heeded the gun lobby's "ENFORCE THE EXISTING LAWS" line all his life, he tells me, gun culture is now embracing irresponsibility as a value

Remember when outrage from conservatives prompted the Army to dismiss a West Point grad and Afghanistan vet because he wrote "Communism will win" in his hat? Man, we were all so young then Also related: just checking to see if anything had changed; it hadn't ImageImage

Everyone's dunking on Lauren Boebert for not understanding the Constitution -- which, yes! -- but if you really want to know what it looks like to elect a shock-radio id that would rather own libs than govern, look at the whole list of bills she cosponsors congress.gov/member/lauren-… This is just a massive list of grumpy symbolic stands that build absolutely nothing for anyone, not even her constituents... but that she can use to fundraise off of the insecure, excitable, and ill-informed

A real disservice is done by using limited headline space on the fact that this perp is an Army vet, rather than the many more germane and remarkably horrific facts in this story. Let me share a few of them here: apnews.com/article/race-a… He was wearing body armor and laden with ammunition for his pistol, but needed to "defend" himself. Against whom? Glad you asked...

Speaking as an armed citizen who observes all applicable laws, I would be very wary of going back to a workplace where my colleagues almost got me killed and subsequently insisted on being able to be armed in said workplace We are moving ever closer toward the possibility of an incident between members of Congress that would make Brooks's caning of Sumner look like en elementary-school recess fight
