The Agìkūyū grew these 3 varieties of maize.

1. Nyamūthaka- Purple grains
2. Nyamūkūū- White grains with a few dark purple ones.
3. Njerū- Yellow

They were planted in both mbura ya Njahì and mbura ya Mwere seasons. They grew very fast.
It was planted using a mūro or kahiū ga kūrima.

Agìkūyū Seed Preservation
One of the primary duties of seers was the storage of planting seeds. The community entrusted them with this duty because they were well versed in meteorological observations. At night as usual they studied the positions of the stars, for instance the Pleiades, a cluster of loose stars in the constellation Tauras consisting of 6 visible stars to the naked eyes. Pleiades are associated with weeding periods hence Kìrìmìri the weeding stars. The direction of the wind and the cloud formation has a special message to the seers

The late Professor Hannah Kinoti in her book African Ethics: Gìkūyū Traditional Morality expounds on these virtues

1. Honesty (Wìhokeku)

Honesty as uprightness (Ūthingu)
Honesty as truthfulness (Ūūma)
Honesty as generosity (Uuma-andū)
Honesty as fulfilment of expectation (Ūhingia)
Honesty as diligence (Kìyo)

Examples of taboos ( Mìgiro) among the Agìkūyū

a.If a cooking pot cracked while food was being cooked in it, that food might not be eaten except by women past childbearing.
b.A husband may not shut the door of his hut save on his wedding night c.It is taboo for young boys and girls to swing with the door lintel. They are wishing the death of their parents.
d.It was taboo for a man to sleep on the side by the outer wall of his wife’s bed.

Agìkūyū Science

The ordinary Agìkūyū people, before the introduction of convectional education, took science as mysteries and subjected it to medicine men. Otherwise, they had an insight in the general application of basic science in their everyday life, just like any other community elsewhere. In any society, the basic application of science was either inherited from their ancestors or a discovery of their own, which in time became a component of their own development process.

The original Agìkūyū Calendar
In Gìkūyū country, there are four seasons and two harvests. We can call this the traditional Mūgìkūyū calendar. Divided into: 1. Mbura ya Njahì 2. Magetha ma Njahì 3. Mbura ya Mwere 4. Magetha Mwere. These are the main divisions of the seasonal calendar.
The Agìkūyū calender was not divided into lunar months. The Gìkūyū word mwaka applied now to an English year, was formerly the word used for the period from one rainy season to another, a period of about 6 months; thus,
