1/ I prescribed statins to thousands of patients over my career as a cardiologist. I believe the evidence: they reduce heart attacks and strokes in people at risk. But I think we've been giving an average answer to a deeply personal question. A thread on the answers I never had. 🧵 2/ Imagine a 58 yo committed senior athlete on atorvastatin. Lipids beautiful. But his VO2max is falling faster than he expects given his training. "Probably normal aging," we might say. But "probably aging" is what we say when we don't have the data to be more specific.
