Why “follow your passion” is terrible career advice: 1) It gets cause and effect backwards.

Often we become passionate about things AFTER we get good at them, not before.

I have a blank schedule most days.
But I work the whole time.
Hard to do unless you have some time operating guidelines.
Here are some of mine: Social obligations, aren’t obligations.

Makes it easy to avoid the many hour long social events that eat up half a day. They add up fast.

Before I met my wife, I never cracked $3,000,000 per year. 24 months after, I took home $17,000,000 in personal income.

Some business lessons I’ve learned from her in no order: 1) Never stifle a generous impulse. Whether it’s a gift or praise. The moment you think it, send it.

To Ivante - the young man who stopped me at the grocery store working 2 jobs with a 1 year old who asked for advice on how to get ahead - I gave you a short answer because I was in a rush and it ate at me. So if you follow me here, maybe you’ll read this.

What you’re going… twitter.com/i/web/status/1… @AlexHormozi Dope advice. I'll add in a little advice born from my own experiences grinding it out:

1. It's going to be tough selling something you have no passion or knowledge about, so find something you care about to sell.

Best life advice my father gave me:

1) Leave it better than you found it.

2) God gave you the power to ignore, use it.

3) It’s better to be envied than pitied.

4) You’ve been through worse than anything they can do to you.

5) Whatever you do, be the best. twitter.com/i/web/status/1… 6) Try harder than everyone else.

7) Be proud of your name.

There was a time I felt very wronged earlier in my life. White hot anger. Didn’t sleep for two days anger. Not tossing and turning. Pacing in a room angry.

The quote that got me to settle down was this:

“To understand is to forgive.” - Pascal

Here’s what I did next… twitter.com/i/web/status/1… I wrote a letter to me from the person who I felt had wronged me.

I tried to write his side of the story.

Truly. I wrote it like an essay.

His childhood. His parents. High school. Upbringing. The times I’d wronged him. Etc.

My greatest learning of my first decade in business: to endure hardship for a longer period of time before demanding a reward.

Nothing great happens on the first try.

It’s the 100th iteration that makes you dangerous and the ability to see out 2-99 to get there. It’s what these guys who launch a new product/program/business every 6 months have yet to learn. They keep repeating the level until they beat the boss. The fortune is in the 43rd version of your first product. Not your 43rd new product.

“Silence is complicity” is dangerous to democracy ☠️

In a sexual setting, if I were to say “silence is consent.” Would you agree? Probably not.

Mind you - I get the good intention to stand up and discourage “unwelcome” socially. Etc.

But…it’s a slippery slope. 🧵 The good does not outweigh the bad.

Example:

If I don’t save someone’s life, does it make me a murderer? With this line of reasoning - yes. Which is what makes it so dangerous.

I’m against human trafficking. But until I say it, I am complicit. Yikes.

So let’s think it thru

If you feel you deserve something, you do not feel grateful when you get it. Because it is expected. You feel entitled to it. Which comes from a place of ego.

If we believe we deserve nothing, then everything we get is above the free line.

Here’s where it gets even funkier…

I’ve had 4 entrepreneurial seasons. I’m on my fourth.

1) Owned and grew a chain of gyms
2) Gym Turnaround Business
3) Gym Licensing, Supplements, & Software
4) Private Equity (current)

I learned different lessons from each. In my first season of business, I learned the basics of marketing and sales. I learned how to get leads, make offers, and sell stuff.

That’s about it. I wasn’t a very good manager or leader. Hated ops. But understood how to make money to pay bills with some extra leftover.

Do you know who buys the most magic tricks? Amateurs or professionals

Amateurs.

Here’s why: Their audience stays the same (friends & family) whereas the professional can keep doing the same 10 tricks to a new crowd every night. There’s a business scaling lesson I take from this.

On the micro level - sometimes the most profitable customers (in this case the ones that buy the most tricks) isn’t what you’d expect.

An early mentor told me “you have to go slow to go fast”

To build something tall, you need deep foundations.

But you have to build that way from day 1 because it starts with the foundation.

It took me forever to get it.

Otherwise, you cap out because you never laid it right. It gets even harder because worse models will sprout up quickly all around you.

You’ll wonder if it was the right call.

This is why it takes a certain character (not skill) to build something big.

Not intended to trigger. Just want to break false beliefs…

If you claim hormones prevent you from losing weight, you claim immunity to death by starvation.

(Unlikely)

Which means…if you can starve to death, you can lose weight.

So…eat less. Or confront why you can’t stop. A “slow” metabolism can make it “harder” to lose weight, but not prevent you. So talk differently about it.

But it’s less PC to say that in our culture of self acceptance.

So this message is intended for the people who want to get in shape and can follow logic. You CAN do it.

I hear so many gurus say “no one can outwork me.”

Only ☝🏼 person in the world can say that...and it’s probably not you.

It also—doesn’t matter.

🧵 Everyone works hard to get to the top.

Work ethic is a price of admission.

But super success comes from something else: leverage.

Six years ago I was selling supplements at my gym and I ran out of inventory on a few key products.

I still had about 20 more consults left that day. And - I still needed to make money.

Result: I ended up selling more than I did when I was fully stocked & learned key lesson… Here’s what happened:

After running out, people kept asking about products we had sold out of.

Their friends had bought them.

They wanted them too. But it would take too long to restock. So I couldn’t provide them. I tried to unsell them on why they needed them.

Awkward.

Our words directly influence the way we think & view the world.

Occasionally I'll say something that really stands out to me.

Sometimes I take mental notes. Other times, I forget what I said.

Here are a few of the #mozisms that have stuck with me over the years: Most people's plans get worse when you add more time to the horizon.

I've been "rich" and I've been poor.

Here are some of the most impactful lessons I learned from both sides of the spectrum: Money exists to buy optionality.

Do not trade optionality for it.
