I think a lot of it's to do with the Expanded Universe, or at least started there. Y'see, when the Star Wars franchise started making novels in the 90s, they didn't aim them at kid audiences; they were aimed at people who saw the movies when THEY were kids.

For context, I'm of Scots-Irish descent. My mother is from Ulster and so were her parents and ancestors. I'm not one of those "I'm a quarter Irish" types.
