You might say, “oh cool. It was a boxed set.”

Ho! It was not just one boxed set!

The 2E era was all about overdoing a setting. We shan’t see you he likes of it again, mainly because it was financially ruinous. But let’s take a (quick) look at all that Spelljammer! 🧵 How about “War Captain’s Companion,” which vastly expanded the ship and battle options?

If you, like the vast majority of players today, did not play Spelljammer… let’s take a look!
🧵
(You can also check out my post on what I thought 5E could do for the setting: alphastream.org/index.php/2020…) The original 2E Spelljammer setting came with two books. Here’s the first. It quickly gets you up to speed with how they make space work.

Let’s talk about Monstrous Compendium!

It’s nostalgia, funny, and useless trivia! Yay!
🧵 Let’s emphasize that. This is useless trivia. You don’t need to know the history of Spelljammer or 2E. Most players today started playing during 5E, so if you don’t know this stuff that makes you very very normal.

To expand on this, some monsters are perfect opportunities to strip away gender or make it (in this case, literally) fluid. Don’t do what 4E did with shardminds, making them beholden to humanoid/human concepts. Many players have shared how DnD helped them examine the concepts of gender via their play, especially with shape shifting and spells enabling that. Let there be a few playable races where gender is an alien concept or applied differently as the default.

I think every fan has a setting they wish had a level of support we just aren’t going to see, because we never should have seen it. Ever. Let me explain. The old DnD settings were done with no proper accounting. This has been established by various sources several times. A setting would get all these supplements and no one in charge knew they weren’t profitable. The info wasn’t shared.

The subject was Perception (or Investigation) and whether as DM I let everyone roll. @dmdavidblog has talked about this. I’ll add my approach here. In general, I only let one person roll. Here’s why: 1) the DC is based on one roll. 2) it becomes chaotic and dissatisfying when players try to all roll at once. 3) Success should not be necessary, but could be fun/rewarding. 4) I want to cultivate a narrative approach.

The DnD Adventurers League changed a number of rules for the upcoming Dragon Heist season. Some loud players are very unhappy. Let’s talk about that. (Thread) As a player, change can be really tough. Our character is often a persona. It is your vessel in that fiction, and hugely important to us. Change is rough because it breaks that fiction.
