From the early 1990’s to 2015 firearm homicide rates declined across all major demographic groups. But those trends have reversed, and with the latest jump in firearm homicides, we are back to rates not seen since the crack epidemic. Alarming! washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05…
Gun homicides disproportionately kill young, Black and poor populations, but the new CDC report shows this is not chiefly an urban problem. Although cities have the highest rates (6.6 per 100k), nonurban areas are close behind with very high rates (5.1). cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/7…

This video and accompanying article draw conclusions about the effects of gun control based almost entirely on research I co-led, yet they reached a very different conclusion than we did. Here I highlight problems that help explain these differences
The article draws 4 conclusions that are not supported by our report. We did NOT conclude that a) all gun research is poor quality, b) the pattern of findings across studies would be expected by chance, c) the field is ideologically biased, or d) gun laws have no effect.

The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) system has been an imperfect but useful gauge of crime trends for more than 40 years. Next January (2021) @fbi is planning to shut it down. This is a big problem for research on crime. ...fbi.gov/services/cjis/…
