This isn't isolated. Yesterday the Seattle Times reported the department is investigating the city's school district over its handling of special education during the pandemic.

Remember: Betsy DeVos told Congress not to give schools major waivers from special education law. In light of these new federal investigations, it's noteworthy that the Biden folks highlighted a meeting Miguel Cardona had recently with disability advocates; concerns about students with special needs are especially acute during the pandemic. edweek.org/teaching-learn…

Glad Brad is highlighting this about FDR. Among others who supported Japanese-American internment who should have known better, and are venerated by many today, are Edward R. Murrow and Earl Warren. Admiring parts of peoples' legacies should not mean other parts are not taught. High-profile if not elite media figures and newspapers supporting Japanese-American internment included:

-Walter Lippmann
-The L.A. Times
-The San Francisco Chronicle

In an editorial, the Chronicle wrote: "We have to be tough, even if civil rights do take a beating for a time."

Thread: Yesterday, Donald Trump announced a new commission to promote "patriotic education." It's probably important to point out that earlier in the day, Betsy DeVos told an audience that curriculum is "best left to states and local education agencies." blogs.edweek.org/edweek/campaig… Beyond promoting "patriotic education" it's not entirely clear what such a commission would do. It's also notable that Trump didn't sign an executive order about "pro-American" education.

Prohibitions on the federal government's involvement in curriculum might have been why.

Jim Blew, assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Education, says during his #EWA20 remarks there are basically two camps in education policy.

He says Betsy DeVos and others believe in an "education reform" model while teachers' unions believe in a "factory-model system." Blew praises hard-working people in schools across the country. #EWA20

It's the factory-model system that I deplore, Blew says.

When I lived in Mississippi, I participated in Big Brothers Big Sisters, like many people do. I spent a lot of time with a young black child who lived in Jackson.

Today, that child, now a young black man, is going to prison. I want to say a few things about it. (Thread) When he was a small child, he was sensitive and earnest. He grew up with a lot of family around, but he lived in a rough neighborhood. Some people bring some vibrancy to Jackson, but it is a tough town without the obvious attractions of Atlanta, Nashville, or Memphis.
