How essential was and will be Twitter for Trump’s political success?
(And what is it that Musk is about to restore?)
Trump had 13 mln followers in 2016 and 88 mln in 2021.
1/🧵 Trump’s twitter followership (2016-2021: 13-88 mln) was by magnitude larger than the best results of three main cables’ prime-time (meaning news-consuming) viewership combined.
Election, Nov 2020:
Fox - 3.34m;
CNN - 2.73m;
MSNBC - 2.49m

Trump's account made Trump president (and unmade him for the second attempt - as of now).
So this particular phenomenon is able to ascend and dethrone the most powerful politician.
Will see if the same issue is able to dethrone the richest entrepreneur. The size of the Trump's Twitter account issue is equal the size of all Musk's assets. Musk should have known that.

To not look miserable, Trump shut down his blog after a month.
The blog attracted
- 1st day - just 159k Fb and Twitter users
- 2nd day - 30k
- daily afterwards - barely 15k .

bit.ly/3zg6HnA It is the very same former king of Twitter with the same message who used to have 80 million followers before the ban.
So, the issue is not with the message but with the medium. 2/

"Crowdsourced scientific muckraking" – a group of networked enthusiasts revealed proofs of lab leak COVID origin.
The Viral Editor of the internet, fueled by the thirst for response, is able to mobilize any needed evidence and expertise.
Also resembles @cshirky Cognitive Surplus. Also resembles a bit The Guardian 2009 project: the crowdsourced investigation of MPs' expenses (500k docs). But that was just crowdsourced filtering of data, organized by the major media org. Just many eyes recruited.

@mmasnick @doctorow @jack Sorry, now yes.
You mostly listed the models that have already failed the mass media - precisely because they provided just a somehow directed channel while platforms provide personal targeting on a scale that... (bla-bla)
Brand advertising? I dunno, I liked old cozy media, too.. @mmasnick @doctorow @jack As for subscription - to what? content? no need to waste time discussing it. Now it's content chasing people, not the opposite. The utility of the interface itself? How is the entry fee supposed to encourage entry?

It appeared that what the New York Times and other mainstream media were doing was a specific sort of business that could not be replicated in other conditions or at the local level. 1/4
bit.ly/3qzVMjv To those lucky few, the commodification of Trump appeared to be a game-changer. Historically, there have been no such political events quite so beneficial to the media, except for revolutions and wars. 2/4
