I cancelled my Direct Debit with Octopus 3 months ago, I pay only what I can afford, and I still receive my energy. Here's a thread on how to do it, it's not illegal, it won't affect your credit rating, and you should not let them intimidate you.
1/ @dontpayuk If you use online banking, go to your direct debits section, and cancel the one for your energy company. Make a note of their account and sort code details on the back of your bill. In online banking, add a new standing order, putting in their account details.
